are near Bend in the Deschutes national
forest of central Oregon where the
Skyliners ski club has a playground ten
miles west of Bend for easy, access. A
forest service lodge, used as a 4-H camp
in summer, serves as a snow sports cen
ter in winter.
Miss Marianne Gerke, Skyliners, re
ports major activities of her club take
place at Hoodoo ski bowl, 45 miles west
of Bend at Santiam Pass. A road from
the highway to the bowl has been un
der construction, but will probably not
be in use this year, entailing a walk by
trail at present of less than one mile
from U.S. Highway,.? 0.
The Central Cascade recreational
council, composed of representatives of
all clubs using the Santiam ski area, co
operates with the forest service in su
pervising ski activities and programs.
Last year the council furnished a free
ski school on Sundays and volunteer ski
patrol service on weekends.
Skyliners club, reactivated last year,
is planning on a busy winter, w ith em
phasis on junior skiing in the thought
that "today’s juniors will become to
morrow’s champions.” Activities this
year include ski trips by high school
groups, ski schools by the Portland and
Bend junior chambers of commerce. In
the past Bend has produced such out
standing skiers as Olaf Skjersaa, pioneer
class A jumper, Phil Gillis, top ranking
junior racer in the last few seasons, Phil
and Sam Peoples and Ster and Jim Mc-
Garvey, Oregon state college varsity ski
team members. Best known is Gene
Gillis, member of the 1948 Olympic
team.
Ed Thurston, operator of Hoodoo
ski howl, had planned to have a new
chair lift and 50 room ski lodge in op
eration for 1948-49, but early snow
fall delayed plans until next season.
In operation during the current sea
son will be four rope tows handling
3000 riders per hour and ranging in
length from 600 feet to 4000 feet, w ith
a maximum rise of 1000 feet. A ski
jump is available for leaps up to 100
feet. Facilities will be primarily in op
eration over weekends and holidays and
by special arrangements other times.
Accommodatoins for Hoodoo ski
bowl visitors are available at a forest
service lodge at Santiam Pass, where
dormitories Ute also in operation. Facili
ties provide for 100 people,including
meals, ski rentals and sales^ Cabins are
also ; available at Suttle Lake, Camp
Sherman and Sisters.
Skiing in the Bend area continues late
in the season, Q the steep open terrain
of Bachelor Bzittle, 25 miles from Bend
on the Century Drive, offers excellent
skiing until as late as June and July.
However, this area is not accessible un
til late spring when roads are opened to
travel.
