Improvements are reported in larger
ski areas, several of which will be scenes
of Pacific Northwestern ski association
jumping and racing tournaments.
Mt. Hood national forest at the
northern end of Oregon’s Cascade
mountains offers the largest number of
individual areas, with seven available
for winter sports fans. TAr Timberline
Lodge area, 63 miles from Portland on
the south slope of Mt. Hood, above
Government Camp, U. S. HighwfH 50,
attracts, visitors from early November
to early June. The lodge itself accom
modates 2 50 guests. Dormitory accom
modations are also available. The park
ing area has space for 700 cars.
Facilities include a chain lift, 5000
feet long w ith,a rise of 1000 feet, and
three rope tows of 400, 500 and 600
feet in length. Problems of operating
the chair lift during heavy snows were
solved during 1948 by building a tun-
nel at the lift entrance to prevent snow
piling up. A number of steel towers
were raised where drifts were particu
l a r ' high.
Mid-winter timberline snow is from
8 to 20 feet deep with temperatures
averaging around. 24 degrees above
zero. Ski classes will be underway
throughout the winter.

ment Camp on U. S. Highway 50 of
fers rope tows of 1,200 feet with a lift
of 500 feet, one of 300 feet in length
and a lift of 50 feet, Multorpor offers
A, B and C jumping hills, as well as
sporty downhill and slalom terrain.

Tom-Dick ski bowl offers a public ski
shelter, chair lift of 3,500 feet with a
rise of 800 feet and two rope tows of
700 and 500 feet in length. The former
has a rise of 250 feet and the latter of
100 feet.

Hill has two rope tows, each 400 feet
in length with a rise of 75 feet.
