take very strong action and go on record
to that effect today, so that the information
might be relayed to the chapters showing
the reasons why the Board has taken the
action of holding in abeyance the action
on these resolutions
Mr. Chidsey rose to a point of order that
the amendment should be cleared before
further discussion.
Amendment to motion carried.
Mr. Chidsey further said his motion in no
way interferes with the subject and he
thought it was a very good suggestion that
Mr. Stewart be authorized to devote his
full time to membership over a period of
the next 90 to 120 days, the termination of
the time to be governed by the committee.
One thing he wished impressed on members
was that when the phrase “devote his full
time” was used, they shouldn’t keep coming
in and loading him up with other duties.
Mr. Chidsey said personally he thought the
time to act is now; that after a month or
two the employees would be adjusted to
the new scale and they would figure they
still were not getting enough to live on, so
he amended the mam motion to read that
during the time this committee is investi
gating the possibilities of an assistant, Mr.
Stewart be directed to spend his full time
on the membership drive. Amendment sec
onded and carried,
Mr. Morelock said he wondered what
this would cost the Association after the
Board had instructed Mr. Stewart to do
the various things mentioned earlier in the
meeting.
Mr. Ericksen mentioned that there was
the overtime problem and the 6 cents car
allowance which should have immediate
attention, and wondered how they could
sell memberships if these pressing prob
lems are not taken care of first.
Mr. O’Neil said he felt the things which
Mr. Stewart had been asked to take care
of should have his attention.
Mr. Ericksen suggested that if Mr. Stew
art could not take care of them, let some
body else do it.
Mr. Query said it looked to him as though
the purpose before the Board need not tie
the hands of the President and Secretary
completely. If an ironclad directive was
given they might want to modify it. If the
Board says do this and nothing else, Forrest
Stewart is placed in the bite of the line.
The President and Secretary should be given
a little leeway to move, and it might be
necessary to do one thing one day and
something else the next.
Mr. White said he didn’t take it that way,
he took the motion to mean “as nearly as
possible.”
Mr. Erickson said those were only two of
the matters; that the others haven’t been
touched on. What was the Association going
to do about salaries? The Association must
have an active committee working with the
Civil Service Commission when they adopt
ed the new salary ranges and when the
budgets were considered.
Mr. Chidsey suggested the word “full” be
struck out if it would alleviate the situation.
He moved to amend the amendment by de
leting the word “full” and substituting the
word “larger part of his” time. Amendment
carried.
Mr. Chidsey said his intention in making
the original motion was that the committee
consist of the officers and that they be
given certain leeway, as he did not intend
to set any hard and fast rules that they
would work from 8:30 A.M. to 9 o’clock at
night on just membership. He admitted
there were other items of importance on
the agenda to occupy their time, but he
wanted to impress on the Board that unless
the membership is increased within the
next three or four months there wouldn’t be
