hotel.
A joint meeting of the four Port
land chapters was held on October 30
a t;th e U . "S. Coast Guard , Legion Hall,
I 8 p.m. M t W alter Ihl presided. Mr.
Forrest Stewart spoke on various Sub
jects, particularly a proposed \ cost-of-
living increase for all employees. Mr.
Ryan, of West Coast Life Insurance
Company, talked briefly on the new

SUCCESS CHAPTER No. 30
William Bartholomew was^elected
president of the Oregon State Em
ployees Association’s Success Chapter
No. 30, at a meeting held recently in
the American Legion hall, S.W. 13 th
and Main Streets, Portland. Bartholo
mew won the election over a field of
four other, candidates. Jack Norton is
the retiring president. , N orton and
Bartholomew are w ith the Unemploy
ment Compensation commission. Other
Officers elected were Louise O’Dean,
vice president; Jan Bartley, secretary;
Al Riden, treasurer; and James Ban
nister, sergeant-at-arms.
Bartholomew was'also elected by the
group to represent the chapter at the
annual convention at the Oregon State
Employees Association in Salem, No
vember 20 and 21.
A novel idea to get more members
H attend monthly meetings was insti
tuted recently. A cash prize drawing
is held at the end of each meeting. I t
is noted th a t several members did not
tu rn out for meetings in the past are
now among those who attend meetings
regularly. Guess who won the last cash
prize? None other than Ye Scribe!
(You can imagine the howls that went
up from assembled members when I
reached for the money!)
Members of Chapter No. 30 are en
thusiastic about the group insurance
plan in a big way. Most of them have
indicated their willingness to accept
it. Those who have not a?; yet turned
in their applications to President Jack
Norton, should do so as soon as I pos
sible.

MID-VAELEY SOCIAL WORKERS I
Chapter 32
Mid-Valley Social Workers Chapter I
was organized in the summer of 1947. I
xThis 'nam e was chosen iM? order that I
Employees, of neighboring county wel- I
fare
might join if they wished, I
and so that social workers employed by I
the state in other than public welfare I
work might feel free to join. It was the I
feeling pF the members that social!
workers and.fhe staffs who assist- them I
might want to discuss problems' which I
would ndt be pertinent to other state 1
employees. A name was therefore cho- I
sen which would indicate this limita
tion of membership. Meetings are held
once each month.
A t the October meeting the mem
bers were privileged to he’a r Miss Lola
BallingerI and Miss Gene Beach, re
cently returned from two years work
in Europe, primarily in Germany. For
the first year they worked for UNRRA
and for the second year were employed
by the American Committee I for the
Protection of European Children. Most j
of the questions and discussions were
on this latter work, of particular in
terest to the chapter members.
