Give Opinions on Sales Tax
It is the intent of the staff to pre­
sent information to the readers of this
magazine on the sales tax question on
which we will be asked to vote on
October
of this year. It is our
desire that all members be fully ac­
quainted with the issues involved. In­
formation is here presented in an un­
biased manner and without personal
opinion. The matter of state finances
is of concern to us all and any subject
of taxation, revenue or other financial
matter is our business both as state
employees and as citizens.
Following are excerpts from news­
paper articles, communications and
other sources, with acknowledgment
of the source, which we have received
or read.
T. M. Jenner, State Tax Commission­
er, Olympia, Washington — "Property
taxation can be maintained at a rela­
tively low level because of the revenue
produced by the retail sales tax. The
p r o p e r t y taxpayers— primarily the
farmers and home owners— will benefit
by a sales, tax because it more equit-

ably spreads the tax burden within the
group which pays a major part of the
cost of government than does a prop­
erty tax. From our experiences in Wash­
ington, .we can only conclude that the
opposition of the Oregon Grange to a
sales tax has been based on misunder­
standing. Here in our state, it seems
quite evident that farmers as a class
