"Bang Board Blues" Hit OS.E.A.
Staff, Secretary Reports
(Submitted by the Paid S taff)
Corn huskers conceived the idea of
mounting a sidepiece, called a bang-
board, on the far side of their wagon -
rack from which the ears of corn re
bounded into the wagon. By listening
to the noise thus created by the husker
it was easy to detect which husker had
recently quarreled with his wife or had
a gripe against the boss.
It is largely from the discussions we
hear at chapter meetings, from the post
mortem sessions following such meet
ings, from individual comments and the
criticisms tossed at us "that We are able
to know what goes on in the minds
of the members. It is largely from such
sources that the policies and procedures
Pif O. S. E. A. are determined.
The thinking of the officers and
staff must be geared to that I of the
membership and also to that of people
with whom we must work, public and
private officials, legislators and the gen
eral public itself.
I t js interesting to view, in retrospect,
the actions taken and the discussions
heard in the various chapters visited
during the last two months.
One chapter is strongly advocating
the idea of retirement at the end of 3 ^
years of service. It has not as yet taken
root in many of the other chapters.
Whether the idea is sound is not for
the paid staff to determine. What kind
of a noise the opposition would ¿make
against the bang-board is not hard to
guess.
The main topic of discussion in the
ten chapters (putside of the Salem area)
recently visited was>-that of, salaries, or

lack of them. The bang-board always
took a beating a,t, this point.
Whether it was the local fashion or
economic necessity, Oregon salaries have
been "daringly” low. The term "m od
est” has been used but "immodest”
would perhaps have been a better word.
Since O. S. E. A. took up the cause,
salaries have improved. However/ they
have -not kept pace with the cost of
