lights. First, we recall the tables piled
high w ith tem pting food, and i t looked
like there was enough to feed the m u lti­
tudes and h a lf o f starving China, but
when the crowd staggered, waddled or
rolled away fro m the tables there wasn’t
enough food le ft to feed a stuffed ca­
nary bird. W hat appetites!
“ The racing events were highly com­
petitive in their respective classes. Ages
ranged fro m six years to sixty. The dis­
appointing factor o f this event was that
the women wouldn’t compete, presum­
ably fo r the inflated currency offered
as prizes.
"Horeshoe pitching, gossiping and
plain and fancy loafing came in fo r
their usual share o f entertainment. B ut
the softball game drew the largest
crowd. A t this late date we can’t
vouch fo r the tru th o f the follow ing,
but this is w hat seemed to have hap­
pened: Charle Erbe and "Red” Wilson
got their heads together and whether
tobacco tags, up they came, each w ith
a formidable team o f 9 to 11 men and
women (girls? pardon us). This was a
sort o f coeducational softball. Red’s
team got o ff to a fly in g start and fo r
several innings things looked bad fo r
Charlie. However, Charlie was un­
daunted. He paced the coaching lines
chewing his "C lim a x” a little faster
and harder, and all the while Red w ith
outward calm was smoking his pipe,
b u t out o f the corner o f his eye was
watching Charlie, th in kin g Charlie
m ight p u ll something out o f his bag o f
tricks (this was a d ry p ic n ic ). W ell,
Charlie did. By some hook or crook he
got three or fo u r men on the bases, and
then one Leo Brunell came to bat. He
took a fresh chew o f Copenhagen,
snapped his galluses, stepped in the bat­
ter’s box, and glared at the pitcher.
The pitcher slowly surveyed the loaded
bases (there may have been a few spec­
tators on them to o ), stepped in to the
pitcher’s box, and started his windup
and shot a fast one rig h t down the
