SALEM CHAPTER No. 1
Greetings, Gates! Here we are again,
pushing against that old time schedule.
Well, the picnic held last year
proved such a success, that everyone
called for an "encore,” and lo and be
hold the voice of the people was heard
and once again the clamoring, hungry
horde invaded the environs of the City
of Dallas. The date—July 21, and as
was expected, in the aftermath of the
spirited inter-departmental s o f t b a l l
games held at the Dallas ball park dur
ing the afternoon, many a would-be
athlete was limping around the halls
as a result of the mistaken belief that
he was still as young as he once was.
All in all, a great time was had by all
those in attendance. (This year we
didn’t forget those swim trunks.)
At the June meeting, "Buck” De
France gave a brief resume of his and
Jim McFarland’s trip to Sacramento,
California, where they attended the
Western Regional Conference of Civil
Service Assembly. "Buck’s” talk was
of particular interest at this time, as^fc
we are going through the throes of r e - ^ p
classification. "Buck” also informs us
that it rains in California. Tsk! Tsk!
We noticed during the meeting that
£. G. Ricketts (Rick) is becoming
quite proficient in the art of "dood
ling.”
Toward the close of the meeting, the
attending members enjoyed the colored
slides taken by Ray Webber on his
tour of duty while a member of the
U. S. Naval forces, showing scenes
taken in the Aleutians, Hawaiian and
Philippine Islands, and in the Admiral
ty group. The only thing lacking was
the presence of Ray himself to give us
a little of the background of each shot,
but he was called out to take a visiting
French engineer around the state and^fc
show him how we do things in Oregon.
However, Mrs. Webber came down and
did a good job of pinch-hitting in Ray’s
place. Joe Weber kept waiting for some
scenes showing those beauteous south
sea island belles, but, like a lot of "GI
Joes,” decided Hollywood did better by
the islands.
