Mr. Nash has his oiling crew here
also, and is making progress, as the
weather is fine for oiling.
This chapter is sorry to hear of the
recent death of James Bedingfield’s
mother at Medford and extends to him
our heartfelt sympathy.
PORTLAND CHAPTER No. 17
We are greatly indebted to Mr.
French for the organization and suc
cess of Chapter 17. We appreciate his
efforts very much.
At the beginning of the year, Mr.
William Burns, from the Liquor Con
trol Commission, was elected our new
president and is very ably carrying on.
If he develops as a president as well as
he has a fisherman, Chapter 17 will
surely be on the map. Mr. Burns
went fishing for the first time, just out
of Oregon City, and succeeded in snag
ging a 20 lb. salmon. This is one of
those rare cases when the big one did
not get away. He was greatly pleased,
and from now on anyone wanting Mr.
Burns can page him from the banks of
the river. Kipling caught his first sal
mon trout from a rock (now called
Kipling Rock) in the Clackamas river
and wrote quite an article concerning
his experience. Maybe Mr. Burns can
tell us of the excitement and thrills
occasioned by the landing of his salmon.
We have had two well attended
meetings this year, and interest is de
veloping in all that the associaton
stands for.
It is gratifying to note that our good
friend and association counsel, Leo
Smith, has been named a member of
the important "Special Committee on
Civil Service” by the American Bar
Association. The other six members of
this committee are from Cincinnati,
Ohio, New York, Washington, D.C.,
and Jackson, Miss. It is our feeling that
Mr. Smith is entirely deserving of this
national recognition.
Our Junior Past President, Allen A.
French, has also been honored by being
elected president of the National As
sociation of Bedding and Upholstery
law enforcement officials at a recent
national meeting of that group in Chi
cago. Mr. French also succeeded in hav
ing the next conference of the national
association held in Portland.
We are working for new members
and hope to have every employee an
active member of the Chapter.
MARION CHAPTER No. 18 ‘
Miss Viola Schrenk, secretary in the
State Tax Commission, was married to
Mr. Carl May on February 19, 1946.
The marriage took place at the Bethel
Baptist Church with Rev. Olthoff of
ficiating. Mr. May was formerly in the
Signal Corps of the U. S. Army* and
served overseas.
