Paving crews, under the supervision
of F. A. Starkey and Milo Barker, are
operating in this area at present, and all
members of their crews are cordially
invited to attend our next meeting,
which will be held on May 27, in the
Moose hall, Albany.
ASTORIA CHAPTER No. 8
John Howry has transferred to Mist
as helper. Johnny was married recent
ly. He and his wife are planning to
make their permanent home there, and
it is reported they have bought a nice
ranch.
Astoria had a well represented meet
ing March 13. Members from the fish
hatcheries at Clatskanie, Jewell, Sea
side and Astoria were present.
Mr. Floyd Simon, former bridge
crew foreman, is visiting in Astoria.
Mr. Simon is still in the navy and has
the rank of lieutenant. He is hoping to
be released soon.
Several members attended a meet
ing sponsored by the retirement com
mittee regarding the Retirement Act.
They reported a good attendance.
Fred Stults’ extra gang has moved
to Astoria. They have removed slides
that have blocked the Columbia River
highway for the past four months, also
removing slides on the Nehalem and
Coast highways. They plan to move to
Clatskanie about April 1.
Mr. Gilbert Sweet, operator on the
Lewis and Clark bridge, is seriously ill
at the Columbia hospital in Astoria.
Earl Addington was painfully, but
not seriously, injured when struck by
a handle protruding from a navy truck
on his way to work as operator on the
Youngs Bay bridge.
Arvid Olson, veteran of World W ar
I, has accepted a position as operator
on the Lewis and Clark bridge.

We are trying out a new idea for our
monthly meetings. The crews in this
district take turns about in furnishing
entertainment at the meetings, also for
refreshments.
The busy beavers of D ufur were first
guinea pigs for the experiment. They
