I had another very exciting day at
Apenhiena where we crossed the Rhine.
Our task force was the first one across
so we went right along with them.
Some of the larger towns we took on
that drive were Frankfort, Erfert, Go
tha, Jenna, Lipzig and to within 15
miles of Dresden where we stopped and
let the Russians take over. We then
started for Czech and Austria where
we were told to pull into an area for
the night. This was the night of May
3rd. Next morning they told us to sit
tight and wait for the war to end which
we did gladly. So when they officially
announced it, it wasn’t surprising news
but just plain good.
I have five bronze campaign stars
for being in all the engagements of
the Third Army.
The most exciting of all was the
counting of our points. For me it wasn’t
so good. I have a total of 65, which is
good, but not good enough to get out
on. I don’t suppose I will be home
until after I’ve made a trip to the
C.B.I.”
Eleven Public Utilities Commission
men are being welcomed home after
extensive service with the armed forces.
Some are already back to work, with a
few still on terminal leave.
Capt. Jim Haley was discharged
from the Army the first part of Janu
ary, 1946 after serving over three and
a half years. He was attached to the
Signal Corps as a Radar Officer and
saw action in the E.T.O. and Pacific
theatres of war. He is Communication
Engineer with the Public Utilities Com
mission with headquarters in Salem.
Don E. Devlin, former court repor
ter with the examiner’s department, re
turned to his desk the first of January
after serving in the army as a T /3 in
Africa and Italy court reporting for
the judge advocate’s section. He was
discharged in November after over
three years of service.
Lt. Jack McCullough returned to
the Commission late in December, 1945
after being released from the Navy.
