CHAPTER NEWS
SALEM C H A P T E R No. 1
Something happened on A ugust 14 th
last which cancelled our scheduled
meeting for that month. Tw o guesses!
However, a few stalwart survivors of
the celebration got around to attend our
September meeting, eighteen in fact,
and we were favored by an interesting
talk by Raymond Reeves on his experi
ences as an infantryman on Bataan,
and while held a prisoner by the Japs
at Bilabid for over three* years. Those
who were privileged to hear Mr. Reeves
carried home some real conceptions of
what real suffering and hardship can
be and a deep appreciation of the forti
tude our servicemen have shown.
Our Chapter is discussing the ques
tion of dues and how best to pay them,
and all who are interested— aren’t we
all— should get out to the meetings to
air their views. We’ve got an election
coming up in December with nomina
tions in order for the preceding two
meetings; and don’t forget, the General
Council meets in February next. These
matters, along with sundry others, will
make our meetings of real interest, and
we expect to have a couple of hundred
of our members out regularly to voice
their approval or disapproval of Asso
ciation affairs. H ave you got a gripe?
O f course! So let’s get them out in the
open at the Chapter meetings.
. Miss Mahany, assistant Highway D e
partment librarian, is having a won
derful time on an extended vacation
trip to Alaska.
Verne Jones, o f the Seabees, is back
in "civvies” again and is studiously
picking up the threads of his old job
with Eddie Clymer, the Highway D e
partment Cost Analyst.
Paul Davies, recently of the Sea-
bees, formerly with the Testing La
boratory;"« back in the harness again,
this time in Mr. Glaisyer’s Department.
Jerry Farrar is reported to be con
valescing nicely from his recent serious
illness and, although not on the active
list as yet, is robust and in fine spirit.
We wish him a speedy, full recovery.
Web Ross is graying rapidly looking
after Jerry’s duties as a D.M.S. and
keeping an eye on his own Division
O ffice duties simultaneously— well, al
most. H is friends are deeply concerned,
but need have no fear as we know Webb
will be O K until after hunting season,
at least.
We are not unmindful o f the State
wide drive and contest for new mem
bers, and it is reported we have been
recruiting at a rate o f fifteen new mem
bers a month. Th at’s not bad, but we’re
going to have to hustle if we win any
prize by the closing date, October 31st.
