here is one of their water holes: some are
taking a bath and others are scrubbing
clothes. And here are babies nursing—
a hounds ear is a good description of
some of the breasts you see along the
way. The villages, those that are not
reduced to rubble, are very attractive
with their tile and thatched roof. Some
of the buildings are, or were, of ma
sonry and others of wood. This island
is more civilized—if you want to call
it that— than any I’ve seen in this
area. They had quite a railroad, it ap
peared that we had torn up the ties and
made a highway of the roadbed. We
paid quite a bit of attention to their
railroad stations for I didn’t see any
that were not blown to pretty small
pieces. We saw a couple of passenger
coaches, pretty modern too. I suppose
they will make good scrap some day.
We passed through the scene of some
of the bitterest fighting on the island
and that was quite a sight. I’m glad I
wasn’t around there a few months ago.”
