transferred to the Naval hospital at
Camp Adair and is now enjoying al
most daily visits with his parents in
Corvallis. The cast has been removed.
from his broken arm. This was a big
relief as he has had to wear this cast
since April and it was getting very
uncomfortable.
S l / c Orville Waddell, formerly em
ployed on the Corvallis Section crew
has taken his new bride to San Fran
cisco where he will have about one and
a half years shore duty.' Orville is As-,
sistant Industrial Manager in the Ferry
Building.
S 2/c Ted Smith, son of the District
Maintenance Supt. at Corvallis, is now
enjoying a short furlough at home after
completing his boot training at San
Diego.
Pfc. Clarence R. Smith, better known
as Bobbie, former gas attendant at the
John Day Maintenance office and sta
tion was in Germany at last writing.

Bobbie entered the service May 21,
1943.
Pvt. Hubert L. Watkins had as
many difficulties breaking into the
Army as some have avoiding it. Due
to an injury received while playing
football when in high school, he was
turned down three times when he tried
to join the armed services. Making a
personal appearance before the Baker
draft hoard he asked fot another ex
amination and upon receiving it, he
was accepted. While in an army camp
in Arkansas he contracted pneumonia
which the doctors thought would be
fatal but fortunately. he recovered. He
later was sent to the European area
with' the infantry and was in Germany
when V-E day came. Hubert worked
for Frank Frey on maintenance and
for C. C. Long as truck driver prior
to joining the army.
Some of the members have heard
from Albert F. Hammond of Roseburg
recently. Albert is still in the Pacific.
He was formerly a truck driver for
the Highway Department.
Robert M. Wilson is fighting the
Japs in the South Pacific. He is the
son of J. ,E. Wilson and was . a truck
driver for the Highway Dept. before
entering the service.
