Since Bob has been attached to this
outfit they have built hospitals, con­
structed and maintained roads and
bridges and operated a rock quarry and
crusher so you can imagine the type of
equipment used.
Bob also has a brother over there
that is an engineer on a small landing
craft;ori a Coast Guard Assault trans­
port.
He continued to write that, "The na­
tive conditions have sure improved in
the last few months. The towns are
much cleaner looking and the schools
are all running. Most of the people in
town are quite well educated and speak
English fluently while those out in the
brush live very much like their ances­
tors did 500 years ago. They eat cocoa-
nuts, rice and lizards and sleep on the
floor.
"The natives do our washing for a
reasonable price. They take the clothes
to the river and beat on them with
paddles. They mash the buttons occa­
sionally, but they do get the clothes
clean.”
Bob also sent a picture of a gathering
of natives at a Sunday cock fight that
was held near where he is stationed.
La Grande recently had a visit from
Ruel Tanler who was a truck driver
for Earl Fay,, at Seneca, before enter­
ing the Navy. His friends were very
glad to see him. After his leave Ruel
reported to Norman, Oklahoma for fur­
ther training.
Lt. Lloyd R. Chandler has gone over­
seas and his mail is sent from San Fran­
cisco. H urry the job along "Pop.”
M/Sgt. Marvin Smith, Army Air
Corps, who spent four years serving
his country has recently been discharged
from the service. He was a truck driver
before entering the service and we
hope he comes back to work for the
state.
