John Frederick Bell, of Ashland, Ore­
gon, was commissioned a second lieu­
tenant in the Army of the United States
recently upon successful completion of
the Officer Candidate course at the In­
fantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Lt. Bell is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
James R. Bell, Ashland, Oregon. He en­
listed in the army on October 28, 1942
and served with the 1 Oth Mountain Div.
before going to officers’ school. He then
held the rank of Sergeant. The new of­
ficer is a graduate of Ashland high
school and he also attended Oregon
State College where he was prominent
as an athlete.
John’s father is section foreman help­
er on the Greensprings.
Pfc. D. E. Hardcastle writes from
Bad Orb, Germany, "Was much pleas­
ed to receive another copy of State Em­
ployees magazine and enjoyed reading it
way over here in Germany.
We are surely glad the job is finished
here and can go home some day. This
country around Bad Orb (home of the
Stalag No. 9) is hilly, has many fir
trees on the slopes and is green, very
beautiful now. We live in a big hotel.
We can’t fraternize with the Krauts
but the army tries tq give us enough
entertainment to keep us busy and our
morale up.
Today has been rainy like Oregon
and I feel, right at home.
Crossed the Rhine at Mainz and spent
some time in Bad Nanheim.”
Staff Sgt. ' Elwin "Bud” Adamson
employed on the Drain Maintenance
crew and paving crew No. 8 before
entering the service is stationed at the
Yakima Firing Center. Bud is instruc­
tor in light arms.
Charles; Campbell is home from ac­
tive duty in the Philippines. Mr, Camp­
bell applied for and received his dis­
charge from the Seabees, returning to
civilian life again.
Cpl. John F. Kergil was married
April 27th in England. The Kergils
plan to make their home in Astoria
after the war. Johnnie says he can hear
Uncle Sam calling from the South Pa­
cific, "Johnnie get your gun, get your
gun,” so he doesn’t expect to stay long
in England.
M/Sgt. Raymond H. Higgins was a
visitor here recently. Mr. and Mrs.
