home, Bernard was married to Miss
Bethal Vandermullen, the' wedding tak­
ing place in . the home of his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gruis.
Lt. Buck Warfield, former Resident
Engineer in LaGrande and Division O f­
fice Engineer in Salem, is in China with
the Army Engineers. Lt. Warfield saw
the first convoy over the Stilwell Road.
Jack Rhodes of the Office Engineer­
ing Dept., has been proudly showing
off a picture clipped from a magazine
in which appeared his brother, Capt.
Chas. Rhodes, PRO Pictorial Officer,
Ernie Pyle, famous war' correspondent
and columnist, Lt. Ross Hazeltine, PRO
writer, and Lt. G. K. Hodenfield, Stars
and Stripes Correspondent. Capt. Chas.
Rhodes has charge of photography work
for Gen. Hodges 1st Army, and has

had some pretty rugged experiences

Pfc, Marshall (Kelly) Palmer of
Manzanita, returned to the States April
15. He was wounded by a mortar shell,
a result of which he lost a leg. This is
Kelly’s second wound. He was awarded
the Purple Heart with an oak leaf
cluster.
T / 5 Alfred W. Bates is in Germany.
In a very interesting letter to J. H.
Scott, Al spoke of seeing moving pic­
tures which were taken on the beach
at Neah-kah-mie showing the Coast
Guard working the War Dogs. He said
it gave him quite a thrill. Bates says
he was stationed in a Baron’s Castle but
he would prefer a modern shack in
Oregon.
Sgt. Chas. W. Dugan (Wayne as we
all know him) spent six months in Lon­
don and landed in Paris two weeks after
its liberation. Since then he has been in
Italy and Belgium and when last heard
of was C.O. of his unit somewhere in
France. He said the French people were
friendly and that he got along well
using sign language.
While in London he was in at least
one major bombing. A bomb landed
about two blocks away. Wayne said he
could understand why some people get
gray hair.
