This column contains the sad news
that death on the field of battle came
to three brave men who were the sons
of State employees. To these gallant
men we all owe a debt of everlasting
gratitude. No one could offer more to
safeguard home and country than did
they. To their loved ones goes our most
sincere sympathy.
Lauritz Hansen, section foreman’s
helper at Detroit, has received word
that his son, Pfc. Albert Hansen, pre
viously reported missing in action, is
seriously wounded at a base hospital.
Lynn Everson, former member of the
siirvey party at Bend before induction
into the Army, has been hospitalized
from the Western Front to some point
in the States, according to information
received by his wife.
Chas. R. Henry, M.M. 2/c, former
motor grader operator at Santiam Junc
tion is now at the Naval Hospital at
Farragut, Idaho, and very happy to be
back in the United States.
We hear that M.. A. Janes, stationed
with the Signal Corps somewhere in
India has been promoted to the rating
of Sergeant. Good luck to you "Gig,”
but pull your helmet down tight even
though it may be a little small now.
And don’t forget that you were one
of the. boys once yourself.
Cpl. Robert D. Date of the para
troopers has just reported back to his
base from a furlough spent in Edin-
bough, Scotland, he claims to have had
a hard time with language and liquor.
Well here’s how "Bob” but watch out
for those Scotch lassies..
The W. L. McCumsey family have
received word that Lt. Lewis McCum
sey, who was reported missing in ac
tion, is now a prisoner of war at some
camp in Germany. Here’s hoping that
we can get some word from and to
him soon.
Carl Joseph Hansen when last heard
of was in Germany on his way to Ber
lin, with the going tough, but to. Joe
this is just another one of those things.
We hope that on his way back he can
stop in Denmark to say "hello” to his
grandmother.
Jack Dellage, a former employee of
the Dexter maintenance crew has re
ceived word that his son was killed in
action in Germany.
Friends of Dale "Squeek” Fallow may
like to know that he is stationed in
San Diego. His duties there are un
known at present, but it is rumored he
may be going to see water soon. Squeek
worked for Mr. Chidsey in La Grande
for a time. Good luck Squeek.
Bob Barnum who used to work in
the shops in La Grande wrote a very
interesting letter to J. K. Campbell
Shop Superintendent. Bob is in the
Philippines and at present is attached
to an airborne aviation engineer outfit.
