"Hooley” Smith has been working
with his crew in the vicinity of Gres-
well, graveling the secondary highway.
Orval Cos has been transferred* tp
Odell Lake as a helper.
Mr. and Mrs. Milo Stewart' are' the
proud parents of-a new baby boy, born
December.
I Ernie Umphlette and his crew found
time to I take some vacation during the
past week, while- the contractor was
shut down for the holidays. Rumor has
it that Ernie and Maclrwin went’on- a
Duck Hunting trip where the birds
were plentiful, and Mac reports thatyit
was a'"fine” hunt.
We have; not had an opportunity ,to
see many of the members from the
Odell Lake, McKenzie Bridge,Ssand
Swisshome crews, but we are hoping
that they will find a way to joiri us at
future meetings.
CHAPTER No. 19— CAPITOL
Our Regular January meeting was
held on the 8th, second Monday, at the
Salem Chamber of Commerce. The at^
tendance;, ; while not large, Was enthu
siastic and those who failed to appear
were the losers from not hearing the
talks by State Executive Secretary For
rest Stewart and District Director Floyd
Query.
Our permanent meeting place is still
a/problem for ..the Chamber of Gomr-
merce will not guarantee us a regular’
night nor can "certain other organiza
tions take care of us: on our chosen sec
ond Monday.

merit system and retirement plan bills.
Our desire is to help those carry the
ball who have been working toward the
association objectives for the past two
years.
CHAPTER No, 21—WILLAMETTE
Attention Other Chapters!
A competitive plan for, getting mem
berships by Willamette Chapter 21, in
stituted at the January 9th meeting, has
resulted iniyery heated competition and
the signing up of 19 new members in
the Public Utilities Commissioner’s of
fice
one week, making a total of
some 75 members of the Oregon State
Employees Association in this one Chap
ter out of a possible total of 93 mem
bers. It is called to your attentiori that
this is an 81 per-cent coverage.
The original
members entered into
a friendly contest to sign up the. addi
tional non-member employees; half of
the members under the direction of
Mrs. Maxine Rasmussen challenged the
other I half of the member^ under the
supervision of Mr. C. E. Jaqua. The
losing side will be required to provide
the entertainment at the. March 13 th
meeting for the winning side and the
new members. The rivalry is very keen
and the results very encouraging.
