J. Williams of La Grande, re-elected

ASTORIA CHAPTER No. 8
At the well attended monthly meet
ing of Astoria Chapter No. 8, former
delegate to the District Council meet
ing, George Perkins of Jewell was again
elected by unanimous vote. C o f f e e ,
cake and sandwiches were served after
the meeting. George Stults of Seaside
won the jackpot, whereupon he paid his
dues in advance. The jackpot helps in
more ways than one.
The Astoria district is favored with
considerable new construction work, all
roads leading out of Astoria are under
reconstruction, a very modern inter
section is almost completed at the junc
tion of the Oregon Coast and Nehalem
Secondary highway just north of the
Youngs Bay bridge.
Harry Melton and his Extra Gang
moved into Astoria last week and at
the present time are removing slides
from the Columbia River highway.
Betzer, Carter and crews have been
in Astoria for the past two weeks in
stalling lights and signs at the new
intersection.
Charles E. McCutcheon, former sec
tion foreman at Shaniko, has taken up
permanent residence in Astoria and is
now an operator on the Lewis and Clark
bridge. It is also noted that Charley has
been experimenting with sagebrush on
the coast highway with L. V. Koons.
Claude L. Potter, former operator on
the Lewis and Clark bridge has moved
to Reedsport. We learn with regret the
recent death of Mrs. Potter, and we
extend our sympathy. We also wish to
extend our sympathy to the Gilbert
Sweet family in the recent death of
their daughter, Mrs. John Hansen.
ROSE CITY CHAPTER No. 5
This dinner was held at the meeting
on November 10.
Sorry to disappoint the readers but
our duck dinner didn’t happen ’cause
no one brought the ducks as promised.
We managed to please the members
however, for we served baked ham,
just plain pork ham, with all the trim
mings. About 70 members attended,
several from the Portland Chapter. We
enjoyed having them and hope to have
them again soon. Can’t forget to men
tion Forrest Stewart, a welcome visitor
any time. Our ad in the last sisue
proved very profitable for the crew at
North Portland has increased to six
men, maybe it pays to advertise. Mult
nomah is short handed, suppose our
prayers will be answered again, bet
some of the boys across the pond would
like to answer them.
Harry Confer, Section Foreman at
Oregon City and an employee of the
Highway Department for the past 25
years, has moved to California. Sorry to
see him leave but he felt it necessary to
be near his daughter and grandchildren.
Guy L. Umscheid, Section Foreman
