GIVEN COMMAND
W ith the Army Air Force Engineer
Command in Italy— Bringing with him
years of varied experience, Capt. Lock-
wood W. Franklin of Salem, Ore., was
recently given command of an avia­
tion engineers utility detachment main­
taining a key airfield for allied air
power in Italy.
In civilian life Capt. Franklin was
resident engineer in the Oregon state
highway department. He received his
ORC commission in the crops of engi­
neers in 1936 but was not called to ac­
tive duty until February, 1941. His
first assignment was a combat engineer
officer commanding a platoon.
Later he was transferred to the staff
of corps area engineer as supply and
reproduction officer. He joined the avi­
ation engineers in the days when the
need for building and maintaining air­
fields for the successful prosecution of
military operations was most acute. Be­
cause of - his outstanding qualities as a
leader of men and his varied military
experience, his aviation engineers utility
detachment has shown a most enviable
record of achievements superior offi­
cers declare.
Capt. Franklin was born a t , Ocean-
side, Calif., but has lived in Salem so
long he considers it his home .town.

has just returned home from the South
Pacific on a well deserved leave. Will­
iam Glen Davidson, C.C.M., is station­
ed at Irquois Point, Hawaiian Islands.
Glen wrote home that he ran into Jack
Sherman, C.C.M., former highway em­
ployee and they sat down and had a
visit about old times with the depart­
ment just like two school girls. Also
that he had to beg to get to read the
TAe Oregon State Employee, for there
was only one copy is the outfit.
W arrant Officer Gilbert "Gib” An­
derson, former member of H ughletts
bridge gang, has returned home for a
well earned leave and is looking well.
"Gib” has been in the South Pacific.
Ten months at Pearl Harbor, then to
the Ellice Islands and then got in on
the Gilbert Islands invasion. "Gib” is
w ith the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering
Corps.
