Capt. Meyer has just returned from
North Africa and Italy. We understand
he has many interesting things to tell
about his travels in these places.
Chief W a r r a n t Officer C. E.
"Chuck” Thompson, is on one of these
unmentionable islands in the Central
Pacific area where he says they have
"buried more Japs than you will ever
see in a normal lieftime.” Chuck advises
he has received two copies of our ma
gazine which he enjoyed very much
and that the cover on the June-July
issue made his mouth water. Chuck
was with' Umphlette on a highway en
gineering crew, prior to entering the
service. He advises the island he is on
is only 12 feet high at the highest point.
Sgt. Francis K. Loter writes from
England that he is doing fine but would
much rather be back with paving crew
No. 4. He is in the A.A.F. Ordinance
Dept.
First Lieut. Dean Wright is now in
B-24 transition school at Liberal, Kan
sas, after 14 months as pilot of twin
engine planes at Big Springs Texas.
Glen W. "Pete” Hammersley, M.M.
l/c , Seabees, former Alsea section Mo
tor Grader operator, has been operat
ing a motor grader on Espirity Santo
Island in the New Hebrides group for
the past 18 months. We have later
word, however, that Pete is on New
Caledonia headed for a rest camp for a
while.
Terstam (Tris) A. Shaver, A.O.M.
l/c , formerly with the highway depart
ment at Bend and Klamath Falls and
more recently bombardier and aerial
gunner with a patrol squadron in the
Solomons, made a surprise visit to the
Bend office recently on a 30 day leave,
accompanied by his wife of Minden,
La. This is Tris’s first leave in more
than a year and he met for the first
time his nine months’ old son, Ronald
Edward. Tris is looking fine and is
anxious to get this scrap over and re
turn to his family and the Dept.
Lester Davidson, M.M. l/c , Seabees,
has,-just returned home on leave after
spending the last two years keeping
the Seabee construction equipment ship
