Norris -E. Maloney, Dane county,
Wis., district attorney, recently issued
a statement relative to the organization
of law enforcement officers from which
we quote the following: "It is only
reasonable to assume that if a deputy
sheriff may go to the county board in
person and bargain for higher wages or
better working conditions — a right
which no one will deny— then he may
also select an agent or representative,
in this case, a labor organization, to
represent him before the county board
or before the state legislature for the
same purpose.”
VETERANS GI BILL OF RIGHTS
The so-called "G.I. Bill of - Rights”
which became law recently lays the
foundation for a broad-scale program
of aids and benefits to World War II
veterans. The act which became effec
tive on June 22 is designed to facilitate
all stages of the veterans’ transition
back to civil life.
An outstanding feature of the act is
the provision under which veterans
whose education or training has been
interrupted by military service may
continue such training at government
expense. In so doing, veterans will be
given up to $500 a year for tuition and
fees as well as subsistence allowances.
The subsistence allowances established
for full-time students are $50 a month
for veterans without dependents and
$75 a month for veterans with depen
dents. Veterans taking courses on a
part-time basis, or veterans receiving
pay for work performed as part of their
training on the job, will be entitled to
lesser subsistence allowances, as determ
ined by the Veterans Administrator.
Other provisions of the act author
ize hospitalization, federal loans for es
tablishing homes and businesses, and
unemployment compensation insurance.

Merchant Marines Rated Military
Service
New York State, county and munici
pal civil service employees who enter
the merchant marine or maritime service
are now placed in the same category as
employees in the military service, and
assured of the same re-employment
rights and benefits extended to employ-
ess in the armed forces. The new law,
effective at once, is retroactive to April
28, 1941.
A committee to study and recom
mend a uniform system of employee
ratings, consisting of state governmental
department heads, has recently been ap
pointed by Governor Darden of Vir
ginia.
