CHAPTER NEWS
CHAPTER No. 1— SALEM
Probably the most outstanding and
memorable event since the first issue
of our magazine was the social night
of the Salem Chapter held in the Moose
Hall, May 12 th. This was an experi
ment by the entertainment committee
and from the favorable comments most
certainly should be repeated.
The evening was devoted to just
about all kinds of games and entertain
ment appropriate for such an occasion.
Had there been a few more bachelors I
think even a poker game could have
been drummed up but the wives came
out in force and pretty well kept the
hubbies interested in bridge and pin
ochle, while the minority members who
for some reason were unchaperoned,
found diversion at darts, pool and the
like.
Thanks to the far-sightedness of
those in charge of the affair in provid
ing prizes for both men and women
some of the members who played with
some of the champs got in on the take
of prizes. Those in this class, and who
won prizes by virtue of reflected skill,
were as follows: Pool: A rt Burt. (A rt
had no competition); Bridge: W. E.
Brown, (his signals w orked); Pinochle:
Joe Stirnaman (dirty work somewhere),
and Darts: Roy Boldt (Roy just shut
his eyes, gritted his teeth and let fly.
Plain luck.) The real champs were
these women: Pool: They couldn’t seem
to hit the ball; Bridge: Emma Brown
(the Browns practised a long time to
cop both men and women’s prizes);
Pinochle: Ruth Query (she can always
show up the Pres, in open competition) ;
Darts: Freda Burt (look out A rt she’s
got a mean eye), and to crown it all
Bessie De France won the jackpot and
Buck immediately invested it for her in
a real estate deal.
The crowning glory was the refresh
ments. Dozens of every kind of sand
wich imaginable, gallons of steaming
hot coffee, plenty of nice fluffy cake
and enough ice cream to fill the crowd.
Boy what a nite!
All Salem Chapter members note:
The meeting nite has been changed
from the second Friday to the first
Tuesday in each month. Since the first
Tuesday of July falls on the 4th it was
decided to skip the regular July meet
ing and have a big all-Department pic
nic, Sunday, July 16th. This will be
a pot luck affair and open to all State
Employees and their families. The en
tertainment committee will have a live
ly program of games and events lined
up so there won’t be a dull moment.
Paradise Park, near the Salem Airport,
is the place. Let’s all turn out.
These are busy times for our mem
bers. Many of them are scattered
around the state on paving and oiling
crews and others are confined pretty
well to their regular duties. In spite of
these circumstances and the always
pressing gas shortage the attendance at
our meetings is better than fair. The
membership of the Salem Chapter now
numbers 156 with new members com
ing in steadily. When our new execu
tive secretary gets to circulating
around, the entire State membership
should show a substantial gain. Mr.
Stewart comes to us highly recom
mended and deserves our 100 per cent
cooperation and backing.
There must be a lot of interesting
personal items which should be inserted
