To the Editor:
I would like to thank the
JTPA organization of the Siletz
Tribe for working with me back
in May/June of 91
towards
employment. The credit really
goes out to the Springfield Area
Office and Don Hudson (who was
the JTPA temp, coordinator at

find
an
Immediate place of employment
for me, turned out to be not just
a summer job but a one year
position beginning In August of
'92. I began working for the

Willamette National Forest in
the personnel department July
10, 19.91 Since that time I
have been'informed I shall be a
Federal Employee upon the
term ination
o f my JTPA
appointment.
Not only have I acquired
some new working Skills I have
also acquired some new
fr ie n d s h ip s
w ith in
th e
Willamette National Forest.
I also would like to
recognize David West, the
current JTPA coordinator, for
his ability to continue having
that great employee relationship
and all the time he has
committed to seeing me through
my permanent employment with
the WII-NF. 1 would like to
further recognize the Siletz
dancer's, Frank Petersen, David
West, and Roseanne Lestenkof
for their creating a much more
aware work environment about
the lifestyle and culture of the
Native American. It Is Important
for me to stay Involved with my
culture, and the opportunity to
share with others about the
Native American culture as a
part of my job Is a wonderful
concept.
To the Confederated
Tribes of Siletz, I would like to
share my concerns In seeing
this particular program continue
to function with much support
and pride.
In closing I would like to
thank all those Involved with
helping me be where I am today-.
I am very appreciative.

TO TRIBAL MEMBERS:
I recently applied for a
groundskeeper position knowing
I would not be Interviewed
because of the hlghschool-GED
requirements, but wanted to
bring
a tte n tio n
to
the
d is c rim in a tio n
of
T rib a l
Members that cannot get jobs
with the Trlbe because of these
requirements. I talked to the
former groundskeeper and he
said there was no high school
or GED required when he got
the job. t!b talked ¡bpehly; of
taking the matter of high school
-GED requirements to Tribal
Court. Education requirements
were discussed at Council
Meeting but Council stuck, to
education requirements. One
Council Member In favor of the
e d u c a tio n
re q u ire m e n ts
recently resigned from Council
and
got
the
jo b
of
groundskeeper.
I received
notice that I'w a s not qualified
to
be
in te rv ie w e d
fo r
groundskeeper position because
I had no high school or GED and
had five days to appeal the
decision
to the General
Manager. I wrote and asked for
a resolution made and passed
by Council of the education
requirements. I did not ask for
an interview.. A day before the
interview, I got a phone call
from the Personnel Manager
saying they would fit me In for
an Interview. I guess because
I'm a logger and don't have a
high school degree I am suppose
to be plumb Ignorant. The first
thing that came to my mind was
they would have to drop the
education requirem ents In
order to give me an interview
and If they did drop the
education, then the staff would
be out of line by not
readvertlslng the job again. If

DID NOT drop the
education, they did me a great
Injustice. I am an Indian with a
lot of pride and I think someone
stepped on my pride. I am not
dropping this matter and . I
expect to face someone In
Tribal Court. I think I have the
grounds for It.

Members, the Tribe pays the
G eneral
M anager around
$70,000 and his fall guy, the
Personnel Manager, around
$35,000 to try and trick the
poor uneducated Tribal Member
with a stunt like this, they
might of had a little coaching In
the background from some
Council Member.

Adriana Elena Ramirez was born June 5, 1992 at Memorial
Hospital In Salem. She weighed 6 lbs., 9 oz. and was 19 Inches long.
Proud parents, are Tonya Martin and Sergio Ramirez of Salem
Oregon, Grandparents Include: grandmother Jackie Taylor and great-
grandparents Jack and Lorna Martin all of Salem, Oregon.
She joins big brothers Jonny age 6 and Sergio age 2.

the birth g fth e ir daughter Julia Lynn Austin' on Juhe 3; 1992. Julie
weighed 7 lbs., 13 oz. and Is 18 Inches long.
Grandparents are Alfred Lewis, Skokomish, Washington; Eileen
Bello, Bainbridge Island, Washington; and June and Bill Austin of
Gervais, Oregon.
Congratulations to Randy and Julie!
Baby McNair
Doug and Jacque McNair of Phoenix, Arizona proudly announce
the birth of their daughter. She weighed 8 lbs., 5 oz.
