MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day Ceremonies were held
on Monday, May 28. It was a calm, cloudy
day, so quiet that It seemed fitting for the
ceremonies that were to be held.
Dignity and pride of life filled the air
as the procession started from Siletz Area
Central Office to the Veterans Memorial
located at the entrance of Paul Washington
Cemetery led by flag bearers Walt Klamath,
Janice Metcalf and Ronald Butler.
The Drummers began with the steady
beat that fills your being and the ceremony
commenced. Tribal Chairman, Delores Plgsley
did the welcoming address followed by Tribal
Members who have served In the armed
forces. These Included: William Depoe; Gilbert
Towner; General Manager, Phil Rllatos; Frank
Simmons and William Towner speaking about
their participation In the wars our country has
known with one continuing theme... If they had
life to do over, they would fight again. Three
volleys were fired In salute to those who have
served their country during war and peace by
Honor Guards Jerry Marzan, Bobby Simmons,
and Delbert Bell
with Frank Simmons In
Command.
Wreaths were presented from each
area office and placed at the base of the
Veterans Memorial by young ladles of the
Tribe.
Pauline Ricks made a presentation of
flowers from the Bell Family to the bereaved

Taps was played by Jimmie Stam In
honor of our Veterans.
The Memorial Day Celebration ended
with a salmon bake and pot luck sponsored by
the Pow Wow Committee.
The hours of work and preparation
that individuals spend to prepare Paul
Washington Cemetery for Memorial Day each
year were as much In evidence as ever.
Handcrafted flowers In all the colors of the
rainbow were arranged as uniquely as was the
life of each Individual for whose memory
they were prepared different from all the
rest. Snoballs, rhododendrons, and cut
flowers of all kinds were used to adorn the
graves.
The hopes, dreams, hardships

endured and lives lived to the fullest were
lovingly remembered this Memorial Day of
those who have gone before and set the
example for the wonderful memorial displayed
at Paul Washington Cemetery each year.
