An Open ■ Letter to Tribal •
Members:
I just received word
that the case of the fired tribal
newsletter editor will get a
hearing before Tribal Court.
The date is July 30, 1990 (a
Monday) and the hearing will
start at 1:00 p.m.
It promises to be both
informative and fun. Did Tribal
Council meet in an illegal
session for the purpose of
censoring the newsletter? Do
tribal members give up their
right to freedom of speech
when they accept employment
with the Tribe?
Did the
General Manager issue illegal
orders to the editor?
Can
probationary employees be
fired for no reason (say having
the wrong hair style)? Has the
General Manager and the Tribal
Council Chairman lied about the
circumstances surrounding my
firin g ?
These are just a few of
the questions raised in the
case.
If you're interested in
hearing the answers, be there
on July 30th. Proceedings in
Tribal Court are open to the
public.
You all have my
personal invitation to attend
the hearing.

I
Hello, I am Randall
Butler. I am proud to be the son
of Alton N. Butler, Siletz Tribal
member and Lois Butler, Grand I
Ronde Tribal member.
I
graduated during school year
1989/90 with a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Psychology
from Western Oregon State
College in Monmouth, Oregon.
I would like to thank the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians for giving me support
the past five years, and a
special thanks to the Salem
Area Office personnel for giving
guidance, emotional support and
friendship.
Education has given me
opportunities of looking at many
different roads of life. One road
is to learn more about my
people, the Indian Nation as a
whole. We are beautiful and
unique people.
May the great
bless us all.
