Chairman’s Report

I am sure as Council members and individual tribal
members, we do not always take the time to say “thank
you” or “I appreciate what you do” enough.
I would like to take this opportunity to express ap
p re c ia tio n to som e trib a l m em b ers fo r th e ir
thoughtfulness, kindness, hard work, enthusiasm and,
most of all, their dedication to the Siletz tribe.
F irst of all, to Mary Alice Muncey, who wrote one of
the nicest letters I have read in our tribal newspaper, last
month’s issue, thank you for expressing what a lot of peo
ple were thinking and saying but never took the time to
write it. To Shirley Strickler, who worked those long hours
in the kitchen during the Pow-wow and sometimes
receives thank yous, thank you for donating your hard
work and organizational abilities. To Terry Russell, who
always represents the Siletz tribe in a dignified manner,
dances at all the pow-wows spreading goodwill and m ak
ing all our visitors feel welcome, thank you. To Bonnie
Petersen, for giving so much of her own time to make sure
that the pow-wow was successfull, thank you. To Bob Tom
and Frank Petersen, for doing an excellent job as an
nouncers, thank you. To Phil Rilatos, for putting in those
long hours to accommodate the committees, staff, visitors
and the Council, thank you so much.
There were numerous volunteers, and staff, that put in
more than their share of time to make this year’s pow
wow a great success.
The General Council meeting in November will be of
great interest to everyone. We will be discussing the
tribe’s proposed legislation to obtain more land. I urge
everyone to attend, to ask questions and be informed. At
the last General Council meeting we discussed the land
transfer and effects it would have on tribal members.
There was good input from the tribal members that were
there, but there were too few in attendance. Tribal Council
hopes to see a good turnout in November. Candidates for
Tribal Council will also have time on the agenda to ad
dress the membership.

I am currently attending
th e
U n iv e rs ity
of
Washington in Seattle with
my m ajor being Health
Sciences. I’ll be starting my
third year (87-88) on the 28th
of September.
I have attended two years
of a summer program at
Western States Chiropratie
College in Portland where I
took c la s s e s in M ath,
English, Biology, Anatomy
and Chemistry. In the fall I’ll
be tak in g Zoology and
Chemistry which are deman-
datory subjects towards my
degree at the University of
Washington.
In closing I would like to
suggest to further gradu
ating students, to give col
lege a chance. (See if you
like it.)
Donation to the Kitchen
The Siletz Tribe would like to than
Gary and Ishbel Butler for their
donation of items to the comnunity
center kitchen on behalf of their
daughter, Tasha Marie, during her
give-away.
The
towels,
serving
ladles, etc., are badly needed for
the comnunity center. Thank-you very
much for your donation.

Dear Editor:
As a Tribal member and former
Councilman, I would like to
comment on the letter to our
newspaper
written
by
Mary
Alice
Muncey
in
the
last
publication.
In
it
she
said she was relating her
"evaluation" of the recent Pow
Wow,
although
her
letter
included
several
other
subjects
unrelated.
A
particular
statement
needs
correction. In it she says
that Gilbert Towner said her
brother (Art) was "responsible
for getting the Tribe restored
10 years ago.". This statement
is untrue.
I d o n ’t know Mr.
Towner, but I doknow that-he
was
nowhere
around
during
tribal
reorganization
and
restoration work— and neither
was Art Bensell or Mary Alice
for that matter, since neither
one
joined the restoration
effort until some two years
after the hard work was done.
Towner wa s n ’t even a "Johnny
come lately", as were Art and
Mary
Alice,
who
did
not
support the reorganization or
restoration when
the
tribe
needed them.
As Mayor of
Siletz during most of
the
twenty
years '
between
termination and restoration,
her
brdther
and
the
City
Council have to be responsible
for the shamefully delapidated
condition of the Government
Hill property which we all saw
on T V when my father and a TV
crew photographed it during
Tribal
reorganization.
As
mayor,
Mr.
Bensell refused
along with the City Council to
honor a request by the then
tribal chairman and several
councilman who appeared before
them, to turn the Government
hill
back
to
the
Tribal
Council as an additional land
base to the cemetary.

brother did not move a finger
toward helping her people in a
reorganizational
effort,
or
why
they
did
not
support
restoration
in
the
first
place! Another glaring error
she has made in a previous
letter
is
in referring to
Charles
Wilkenson
as
our
"first" Tribal attorney.
He
was
acctually
thq.. third!
First was John Volkman, who
served for free, then Doug
Nash, and then Wilkenson, both
of whom were paid by the
native American Rights Fund
for their services. Since our
paper is widely read, care
should be given to facts, not
something
that we
"wished"

concluding,
that I appreciate the many
years of service Art has given
and also that which Mary Alice
has and is giving.
But so
have
a multitude of other
people,
many with stronger
leadership in the early years,
and at least three now on the
present council.
It took guts
and determination to effect
reorganization,
find
and
acquire free legal services
for
the
tribes,
and
to L
coordinate preparation of the
restoration bill itself— not
to mention getting Oregon’s
most powerful Senator and Rep.
Les AuCoin
to sponsor the
bill.
Art did not do this!
Someone else did...my father
and Sister Francella griggs.
That someone would say Mr.
Bensell was "responsible" for
restoration
is
completely
untrue. Anyone so naive as to
believe this would helipv» tho
next Pope will be Ayatolla.
I
respect and admire hi m for
many of his accomplishments,
but
being
responsible
for
restoration
is
not
one
accomplishment h e can truly claim..
