On Wednesday, the 29th of
April the Tribal Community
Center hosted the “Just Say
No Club” of the Siletz School.
The Captains of each club
were present. They were;

They shared w hat their
prospective clubs were do
ing, and what they hoped to
accomplish. They had an in

editor in March, stating that
alcoholism is a disease I
have talked with m any that
disagree with that theory,
and thats OK but I will give
the AMA definition of a
disease then you can decide
if it fits:

entire body or any of its
parts, its etiology, pathology
and prognosis m ay be known

Club” sponsored by the
Newport Optimist Club was
well attended, even if it did
show signs of raining all day,
but we did luck out, the rain
ceased about the time the
parade started.

For Parade
It was 9:30 am , the wind
w as blow ing ev e ry th in g
around, the rain was coming
down sideways, Shirley and
Karen were trying to hold
down the plastic while F ran k
taped it down. There was no
one else around but the
Search and Rescue Team
m em bers, who were direc
ting people where to park. (I
m ean it was just us and
them! Who else would be
crazy enough to come out on
a day like this?)
The tape wouldn’t hold, we
were soaked and cold, right
there and then we voted to

climbed back into the truck,
while the plastic flew around
over our heads. Then we had
to w ait because we had other
people coming.
In the meantim e a few
pickups pulled in pulling
boats, (were they trying to
tell us something?) F ran k
disappeared (we later found
out he went an d had the 99i
b reak fast!!!!!) E very once
in a while the search &
rescue men cam e around to
check us out. The royalty
princesses showed up and
waited around and we sent
th em on th e ir w ay to
Chemawa.
Where was all this happen
ing? At the Loyalty Days
P arade, in N ew port,‘Bonnie
P etersen showed up and we
decided we were all wet
anyway so we m ight as well
go ahead with it. F rank went
into Freddy’s and bought
Shirley a hat, then he went
back and bought a plastic
covering w ith tie-dow ns.
Between us all, we tied it
down, got our signs on the
truck and were in business.
Janice Metcalf showed up
to help. The rain slowed
down and more people show
ed up. We even had a drum
show up, thanks to Bruce
Butler, III, Gaelen Black,
and Gary Davis. They did a
good job even if they did get
hoarse. We saw a lot of tribal
m em bers and friends along
th e w ay a n d e n jo y e d
ourselves even if we were
cold and wet. We ran out of
candy and flyers and we
w e re n ’t ev en h a lf w ay
through the parade yet. But
not bad for the late s ta rt the
Pow Wow Committee had
this year.
After F ran k bought the
hat, the covering and all our
hard work getting i t on, the
rain q u i t . . . all through the
p a ra d e !!!!! Thanks go to

Teens Against Drug And Alcohol Abuse
T.A.D.A.A.A.! is an exciting new group in Siletz, started
by teens for teens. The feeling was, ’There is nothing for
us to do in Siletz, so it’s easy to get in to trouble.’ All the
teens were interested in holding drug & alcohol free ac
tivities and some felt they also needed a support group to
overcome drup & alcohol problems. Since March,
T.A.D.A.A.! has held rap sessions/one on one counselling;
a barbeque; film night; and making and eating a four foot
banana split.
On E aster weekend, we held a 50’s and 60’s ’Bunny Hop’
dance a t the Tribal Community Center. The Cody Taylor
Band had everyone rock’n roll’n. F rank Rilatos won first
prize for best costume; Jessica Rilatos cam e in second &
Troy Olaphan third. Everyone from 8 months to 50years
old totally enjoyed themselves. We felt proud that we pro
vided entertainm ent in Siletz. Another dance is planned
for Sat., June 13th, 8-11 P.M ., so m ark your calenders
now!
One of our long term goals is, to start a teen center in
Siletz. We feel that there will always be teens in Siletz and
if there is no where to go, then they will hang out on the
streets and could get into trouble. Our dream is to rent or
preferably buy, a house large enough to have a pool room,
video gam e room, craft room, rap/counselling room and
homework room. We’d like to have w eight/sports equip
m ent and sta rt classes in this, along with crafts. Our fun
draising activities for this have included a ca r w ash; bake
sale; bottle drives and donation cans in Tribal offices and
around Siletz. WE WILL BE HOLDING ANOTHER BOT
TLE DRIVE SOON, SO PLEASE SAVE YOUR CANS /
BOTTLES. We are also working on becoming a non-profit
organization.
Our meetings are held Tuesday and Thursdays from 7-9
P.M. For location or more information please call Jessica

Butler. All teens are welcome to attend, but we ask that
you only come if you want to. We feel, teens should not a t
tend meetings only because of parental pressure to do so.
We also have agreed, that anything discussed at
meetings, is not discussed outside them. We ask you to
respect this.
We would like to thank the people of Siletz. Your support
and encouragem ent has m eant a great deal to us. We also
realize that there are people who a re critizing us. To
them, we would like to say - Yes, some of us are labelled
trouble m akers and caulls, but we are trying to help
ourselves. Like everyone else, we need to feel accepted.
We need to feel good about ourselves. Please, keep an
open mind and give us a chance.
Once again, we’d like to thank all who have helped us.
