1984 SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Applications a re now being accepted for the fifth
annual “Sum m er Enrichm ent P ro g ram ” sponsored by
the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health B oard’s
Health C areers Opportunity Program .
Selected individuals m ust have an interest in one of the
following a re a s : medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, optom
etry, nursing, podiatry, pharm acy, veterinary medicine,
health planning, health adm inistration or an allied health
occupation.
Twenty students from E astern Washington, Idaho, and
Oregon will be selected to participate in the six-week,
program scheduled to commence on June 16 and end on
July 27,1984.
The NPAIHB will provide transportation cost to and
from the training site in Portland, Oregon.
The six-week Sum m er E nrichm ent P rogram is de
signed to strengthen the students’ basic skills in
m athem atics, science, and communication skills.
Portland State University is selected as the site for
academ ic instruction. Dormitory arrangm ents will be
with the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center,
which is within close proxim ity of Portland State.
LOCATING
THE STAFF
There has been some confusion as to where the Siletz
Area staff is all located. I hope this will assist Tribal
m em bers in locating staff.
The Siletz Area Office is located a t 106 M etcalf Ave.,

P rogram curriculum includes general m ath (four
levels of difficulty), science (biology to chem istry
em phasizing problem solving), ’and english/w riting
( which includes m edical terminology ).
Students will attend approxim ately twenty-five (25)
hours per week in classroom and laboratory instruction.
Students will receive .a stipend and nine (9) college
credits after successful completion of the program .
Other highlights of the sum m er program include
Health C areer Workshops and Speakers designed to
encourage students into particular health professions.
Field trips to orient students to professional health and to
the university environm ent, and extra-curricular activi
ties to prom ote interaction am ongst participants.
In the past three (3) years, seventy-three (73) students
from the E astern Washington, Idaho, and Oregon states
have successfully completed the program ; the m ajority
of which a re now attending institutions of education
pursuing a health career.
The NPAIHB’s Executive Director and Health Career
Counselors will m ake the final selection on program
participants. Selected individuals will be notified on
M arch 1,1984.
Eligibility criteria for the Sum m er P rogram is as
follows :

The hunting season ended on November 8th this year.
The salmon season ends on November 29th. One of the
requirem ents that we all heed To rem em ber is that these
tags m ust be reported on.
If you killed a deer the sex of the deer m ust be reported
as soon as possible. If you catch a salmon th at also m ust
be reported.
The receipt that each Tribal m em ber signed gives the
date for the retu rn of the tags if not filled this season: If
you fail to report or retu rn your tags by the date stated
on the receipt you will be in violation of the Hunting and
Fishing Ordinance and will forfeit next season’s hunting
privilege.

SLIM DOWN
1. The applicant m ust be Native American, with priority
given to m em bers from E astern Washington, Idaho, and
Oregon.
2. The applicant m ust have completed his/her senior in
high school or have a G.E.D.
3. The applicant m ust have a need for the training as
shown by subm itted students’ transcripts, a n d ;
4. The applicant m ust show an intereset in furthering
his/her career in the health field (as expressed in a
one-page narrative).

open to everyone in the community. Weigh in weekly
every Monday a t the Aldridge House on Government
Hill. Cost of the contest is $3.00 per person payable within

We have always had a g reat success with our weigh in
