ADUlxT VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
Applications are being accepted for the Adult Vocational Training
Program sponsored by the Siletz Agency and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The objective of the program is to help adult Indians obtain reasonable,
and satisfactory employment through vocational counseling and guidance,
institutional training in recognized vocations and trades, not to exceed
24 months except for registered nursing which is available up to 36 months

NEW FOREST MANAGER:
The Siletz Forestry Department has filled the position of Forest Manager.
Gary Varner started to work in June as the new Forest Manager.
Gary comes from the Yakima Agency where he was a Forester in Timber Sale’s
Administration from 1967-1977 and from 1977-1981 he was District Officer,
at the Glenwood Ranger Station which is another area of the Yakima Agqnqy.
Gary was born and raised in Tacoma Washington, attended Olympic College,
Washington State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in
Forest Management.
Gary lives in Siletz with his wife and family.
TIMBER SALE FOR THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF SILETZ INDIANS
The first timber sale for the Confederated Tribes of,Siletz took place
at the Siletz Area Office on July 1, 1981. There were three companies
bids submitted, Publisher Paper, Toledo, OR. Oregon Lumber Export,
(formally Guy Robert’s Lumber Co. Toledo, OR.), Mountain Fir Lumber Co,
Portland, OR.
The Department of Forestry estimated there was 3,320 MBF (thousand
board feet) of timber’.
The minimum bid excepted was $300.0t) per
thousand board feet for the Douglas Fir, and $60.00 per thousand board
feet for the Red Alder.
Publishers Paper Co. submitted a bid of $367.00 per thousand board feet
for the Douglas Fir and $60.00 per thousand board feet for the Red Alder.
The approximate value of the timber sale $1,219,640.00 awarded to
Publishers Paper Co. The company has two years to complete the cutting
of the timber.
The Tribal Council will determine the budget fox these dollars and then
submit a budget to the BIA superintendent Bernard Topash for approval.
