Applications are currently being accepted for higher education scholarship grants for
the 1981-1982 school year. Enrolled Tribal Members with one-quarter degree blood of
a federally recognized tribe or tribes who have been accepted as full time students
in programs leading to a degree from an accredited institution of higher education;
have documented financial need; and have applied for all other available sources of
financial assistance or agree to apply for such assistance before the beginning of
the next term are eligible for funding under this program and shall be given priority
consideration in awarding grants. Priority also shall be given to Tribal Members
enrolled in undergraduate programs. Applications are available at the three area
offices or the central office. The due date for applications is four weeks prior to
the beginning of the term/semester. Currently over twenty students are receiving
higher education grants.
Applications for Chemawa Indian School are available from the Superintendent at the
Siletz Agency. Chemawa offers an accredited high school program and is operated by
the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The 1981-82 school year at Chemawa begins August 29,
1981 and ends May 28, 1982.
Applications for Adult Vocational Training are available from the Superentendent
at the Siletz Agency. This is a popular program and currently has a waiting list of
approximately ten people. A wide variety of vocational training courses are available.
One example is bookkeeping. There are currently many job opportunities for graduates
of two year bookkeeping courses. The vocational training program for the Siletz
agency is currently administered by the Portland Area Office, and the Siletz Agency.

The Central Office and the Siletz Area Office held a "SURPRISE" potluck party
at the Area Office for Alan Wilkinson, Tribal Accountant. Alan was presented
with a beaded medalion from all of the staff.
Alan is taking a three (3) months leave of absence starting June 15th. Alan
will undergo open heart surgury at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland,
Alan works very hard and long hours keeping the books for the Tribe,
We are all going to miss Alan and we wish him a speedy recovery.
