Improved emergency coverage at District Hospital
An improved method of physician
coverage in the Emergency
Department at Columbia District
Hospital has been initiated, and is
working successfully.
Dr. Michael H. Chamales, Director
of Emergency Medicine at Columbia
District, said the new staffing has
resulted in the addition of four
fulltime emergency physicians to the
E.R., working on a rotation basis.
The four will share with Dr.
Chamales the responsibility for the
emergency care of patients, freeing
other members of the medical staff of
the time consuming necessity of
staffing the E.R. on a regular basis.
If patients have a family physician
in the area, Dr. Chamales said, they
will continue to be able to request to
see that physician in cases of
emergency.
Following
initial
evaluation
by
Emergency
Department physicians, specialists
will continue to be available for
consultation, as necessary.
Dr. Chamales said the four
physicians working with him in the
E.R. all have a high degree of
proficiency in emergency medical
care, and all come to Columbia
District Hospital with strong
academic records and performances
in internships and residencies.
Dr. Bonnie Sidoff, who has been
working
in
the
Emergency
Department here for several months,
has just completed a residency
program in Emergency Medicine at
the University of Oregon Health
Sciences Center.

addition, will be Dr. Dennis D.
Winner, Dr. Michael L. Murray, and
Dr. Robert E. Tenold, a specialist in
emergency medicine.
Dr. Chamales said a physician is
always on duty in the Emergency
Department at Columbia District, on
a 24-hour per day basis. He takes
pride in the fact that patients are
treated competently, and with as
little delay as possible when they visit
the Emergency Department. He
emphasized that the Emergency
Department is modern, well equipped
and excellent for a facility of this size.
The staff and facility are prepared to
handle virtually any type of
emergency.
With the availability of the fire
department ambulance service and
Emanuel Life Flight (a helicopter
ambulance) it is also possible to
transfer patients quickly and safely,
Dr. Chamales said.
As Director of Emergency
Medicine at Columbia District, Dr.
Chamales has instituted several
changes which have resulted in
improved care and convenience for
emergency patients, and for those
requiring follow-up on their
emergency care.
In addition to the physician
staffing on a 24-hour basis, the
Department is also staffed by at least
on Registered Nurse and an
emergency department assistant who
has training at the Emergency
Medical Technician or Nurse Aide
level. Additional assistance in the
E.R. is available from hospital
personnel, as required.
Dr. Chamales, in addition to his
practice
in
the
Emergency
Department,
maintains
a
dermatology practice at Columbia
Hospital District Health Center and
Scappoose Health Center, as well as a
limited family practice.
A native of Texas, he received a
bachelors degree in pharmacy at the
University of Texas at Austin in
1968, and a masters degree in
pharmacology from the University of
Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
in 1973. He completed medical
training there in 1974, interned at the
University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center in Oklahoma City in
1975, and completed a dermatology
residency at the University of Oregon
Health Sciences Center, Portland, in
1978.
While in that residency program,

dermatology practice here.
Dr. Bonnie E. Sidoff has been
practicing in the Emergency
Department at Columbia District
Hospital for several months while
completing her residency in
Emergency Medicine at the
University of Oregon Health Sciences
Center.
A native of New Jersey, Dr. Sidoff
received her bachelors degree in 1974
from the University of Wisconsin at
Madison.
She completed medical training in
1978 at Tulane University in New
Orleans, and interned at Emanuel
Hospital in Portland in internal
medicine and surgery through 1979.
Dr. Robert E. Tenold, a specialist in
internal medicine, will also be
practicing in the Emergency
Department at CDH. A native
Oregonian, Dr. Tenold completed his
bachelor of science degree at Stanford
University at Palo Alto in 1974, and
his medical training at the University
of Oregon Health Sciences Center in
1978.
He interned in critical care
medicine at Sacramento Medical
Center in California, completed
internal medicine residencies at the
University of California at Davis and
Sacramento Medical Center in 1980,
and has just completed an internal
medicine residency at the University
of Oregon Health Sciences Center,
Portland.
Michael L. Murray, M.D., is also
practicing in the Emergency
Department at CDH. He attended
Western Michigan University and
earned a degree in chemistry from the
University of Colorado at Boulder in
1976. Dr. Murray completed his
medical training at the University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1980,
receiving honors in the practice of
emergency medicine.
He has just completed an
internship at the University of
Oregon Health Sciences Center,
including emergency medicine,
general surgery, internal medicine
and surgery.
Dennis D. Winner, M.D., joined the
staff in the CDH Emergency
Department after having completed a
medical/surgical internship at the
University of Oregon Health Sciences
Center, Portland.
A native of Michigan, Dr. Winner
received a bachelors degree in
engineering at the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1976, and
completed his medical training at
Wayne State University in Detroit in
1980. He completed preceptorships at
St. Johns Hospital and Patawaing
Community
Hospital,
and
externships at Blodgett Memorial
Hospital in Michigan, University of
California, Davis, Sacramento
Medical Center in California and
Sacred Heart Medical Center in
Spokane.

NOTICE OF MEASURE ELECTION
Vernonia School District 47 J
Notice is hereby given that on Tuesday, September 15, 1981, an
election will be held in Vernonia School District 47J, Columbia County,
Oregon. The polls will be open from 8 am to 8 pm. The following question
shall be submitted to the qualified voters thereof:
Special Operating Levy Outside the Tax Base
Shall School District 47J be authorized to levy $242,195 outside the tax
base for financing operation during 1981-1982?
The purpose of the levy is to provide sufficient funds for operation of the
educational program for approximately 700 students, Kindergarten
through Grade Twelve, that attend Vernonia High School, Washington
Grade School, Lincoln Grade School and Mist Grade School.
This amount of tax levy requested is in excess of Article XI, Section 11,
of the Oregon Constitution and is required to maintain the normal full
school year operation of the educational program. Program costs include
staff salaries and benefits, energy, insurance, supplies, maintenance and
other regular costs including transportation, extra-curricular activities
and lunchroom operation. If this measure is approved, $242,195 of the
taxes levied will be totally financed by local taxpayers without any
partial state payment. The estimated tax rate will be $3.25 per $1000 of
the true cash value exclusive of the amount levied within the authorized
base.
