Fire danger closes local forests
The risk of wildfire in
Northwestern
Oregon
has
increased dramatically during
the hot, dry spell of the last
several days. The burning index
(a system designed to judge and
predict fire potential) is as high
as it has been in years, and the
forecast calls for more of the
same type of weather, according
to State Forestry officers.
Further restrictions regarding
smoking, campfires, and logging
operations went into effect
Monday morning, August 10, to
help reduce the risk of wildfires.
These restrictions include a
regulated use closure which
prohibits:
1) Smoking on timber, brush,
and grass lands except in an
enclosed vehicle.
2) Campfires on timber,
brush, and grass lands
except
in
improved
campgrounds •
and
designated areas.
3) The use of chainsaws on
non*residential operations
between the hours of 1 pm
and 8 pm.
A partial closure for industrial
logging operations also went into
effect Monday morning. These
include:

SEISMIC TESTING— A Western Geophysical seismic testing crew
supervised by Mike Grammer (above, standing in doorway of
computer trailer) has been working on the roads surrounding
Vernonia recently. Using four simultaneous sound wave signal sweep
generators they are exploring for gas pockets. Grammer says he
expects to begin conducting tests that measure the shock waves
created by carefully planned blasting in these same areas sometime
this week.
