Rider category.
BELOW— Merry Christmas in
July was the message as the
Forestry Service Santa Claus
talks with kids along the parade
route. Taken by surprise at his
appearance many onlookers
wanted to know what Santa was
doing in the parade. Saying the
North Pole is cold year-round,
Santa added, “I deserve a
chance for a suntan, too!**
EMT class scheduled
An Emergency Medical Technician
I Class will be held in Hillsboro
beginning August 17, 1981 and class
times will be from 7 pm to 10 pm
Monday and Wednesday evenings.
The class is Washington County
EMS and Oregon
State EMS
approved and will be coordinated by
Jimmie L. Floyd, EMT IV-Paramedic
with Metro West Ambulance. The
class will meet the Department of
Transportation standard and provide
inservice both on a paramedic
ambulance and in the emergency
department of Tuality Community
^Hospital. The class will also prepare
chose interested in being able to take
the state and/or national certification
examinations.

Current worm
scare just rumor
“In spite of rumors to the contrary,
earthworms are not added to the
foods that we buy,” says Susan
Gangler Landgren, Columbia County
Extension agent.
The origin of these rumors is
puzzling. Some consumers may have
misinterpreted the name of an
additive in cured meat products.
Sodium Erythorbate (which has
nothing to do with earthworms) is
used to prevent fading of color in
cured meats. It also improves the
shelf life.
Earthworms
have
not
been
approved by the federal government
for use as an ingredient in food, Mrs.
Landgren says. Federal regulations
set standards which spell out the
ingredients
allowable
in
food
products.

Oregon
State
University Extension foods and
nutrition specialist, points out that
the alarm about earthworms can be
traced to our cultural definition of
acceptable food. Out culture basically
defines what we shall consider food
and for whom and under what
circumstances.
Although earthworms are edible,
we do not happen to consider them an
acceptable food. However, in other
cultures earthworms may be part of
the daily diet. For instance, grubs
(wormlike larvae of insects) are
consumed
in

African
countries.

thé severity of cuts in school
programs and services necessary.
Voters of the Vernonia School
District will be asked to approve the
reduced special levy of $242,195 at an
election 'on September 15, 1981.
Failure to secure voter approval at
that time would mean that the school
district would not be able to operate
the remaining programs and services
for the full year. Additional cuts in
programs such as all sports,
transportation and school lunch or
curtailment of the school year would
have to be considered.
In other action taken at the last
meeting, the school board approved a
use fee to recover costs when school
facilities are used for activities other
than those officially authorized as
school functions. A charge of $15 per
session will be made for use of the
gyms at Washington Grade School
and Vernonia High School. The
charge will be $5 per session for use of
other school facilities. Charges will be
effective September 1,1981.
