Vernonia women
run rapids
by Ruth Burkett
The Deschutes River, near the town
of Maupin, is the starting point of a
thirteen mile rafting run of some of
the most scenic white water in central
Oregon. Five Vernonia women got
together on Tuesday, July 21 for the
three hour drive to Maupin over the
beautiful Mt. Hood highway and then
into large rubber rafts for the exciting
white water run. Mary Schaub, the
only one with previous rafting
experience assured one and all that it
would be the time of their lives. Mary
along with Edna Seeberger, Jennifer
Ragsdale, Ruth Burkett and Julie
Prohaska of Vernonia, and Julie’s
sister,
Marilyn
Congdon of
Beaverton, put in the river at 9:30 am
for the first six hours of excitement.
White Water Inc., of the Dalles, led
the expedition with their river
expertise and a gourmet lunch. Since
there were two rafts plus one other
with beverages and equipment, that
opened the way for terrific water
fights while floating along the calm
portions of the river. Five gallon
buckets were the weapons and no one
escaped the siege without a dousing.
Though nearly all were novices of the
sport, rapids ranging from one to
four-plus were negotiated safely.
White water is rated from one, which
is very simple rapids to six which
should not be attempted.
Julie Prohaska summed the entire
expedition up perfectly, “Just say we
all had a GREAT time!” This may be
the beginning of an annual event.
