Fruits of labor" at hand
by Bill Hansen
Now that summer has finally found
it’s way to Vernonia, your garden will
grow rapidly as night time soil
temperatures increase. By now, of
course, you have begun to enjoy the
“fruits” of your labors with crisp,
flavorful fresh garden lettuce and
other greens; tiny carrots as you thin
them to make room for the rest to
mature; tiny beets, and of course my
all time favorite; creamed new
potatoes and peas. While one
normally thinks of the fall as harvest
time, reaping the benefits of yoUr
hard work begins much earlier in the
summer.
During periods of very hot weather,
such as we now have, you will need to
step up your watering program.
Don’t be too concerned, though, if
many of your leafy green plants seem
to wilt during the heat of the day.
This is normal, and they should snap
right back as soon as the sun is down.
If possible, water during the early
morning hours during periods of
unusually hot weather. This allows
FREE
for better penetration into the soil
and also better prepares your
vegetables for the heat of the day.
But, as I have said before, if the only
time you can water is during the
middle of the day, go ahead and do it.
Now is also the time for mulching for
moistureretention.
Before long now, you will be seeing
some very large and very ugly green
worms on your tomatoes. They are
about three or four inches long, pale
green in color and have a distinctive
hook at one end. This is the tomato
hookworm, and while I admit it’s
very ugly, it is really quite harmless.
As a matter of fact, some gardeners
claim it provides a service by eating
small side shoots or leaves, thus
relieving the gardener from picking
them off. You can control them by
merely picking theiU off and
destroying them; or, you can let our
friendly (?) wasps do it for you. Wasps
like to lay eggs on them and use them
as a sort of living incubator...

Holly Holm crowned Jamboree Queen
TENSE MOMENT— The audience
packing the WGS auditorium Friday
night was as tense as the three girls vying
for the honor of wearing this year’s
Jamboree Queen crown. After each of the
girls gave a speech about what being a
Princess has meant to her the moment
finally arrived. Slowly, last year’s
reigning Queen, Angie Remsen, walked

Bicycles on sidewalks illegal, dangerous
Citizens, both young and old, are
reminded that riding their bicycles on
any city sidewalk at any time is
illegal. Due to numerous recent
complaints the Vernonia Police
Department has been directed by the
city council to begin citing offenders
in the very near future. Penalties
from girl to girl holding the crown in her
hands. After a false start or two, just to
whet everyone’s appetite, she finally
settled the tiara on Holly Holm’s head.
Holly and her court; Tawna Arnold and
Melody Sauer, have participated in
parades in Scappoose and elsewhere
already and rode in Saturday’s Jamboree
Parade and awarded prizes at the Logging
Show on Sunday. The Queen’s Court will
continue
representing
Vernonia
throughout the year at various functions.
