OBITUARIES
Ruby E. Elliott
Ruby E. Elliott, 83, resident of the
Vernonia community since 1956 died
at her home, 576 Madison Ave. in
Vernonia on Friday, July 3, 1981
following an extended illness. Funeral
services were held Thursday, July 9
at 11 am at the Fuiten Mortuary in
Vernonia with Rev. Russell Vinyard,
pastor of the Vernonia Christian
Church
officiating.
Committal
services
followed
with
vault
interment being held in the Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery.
Ruby E. Elliott was bom March 3,
1898 near Elmo, Nodaway County,
Missouri, the daughter of George W.
and Laura Mitchell Snodderley. She
was raised in Missouri and received
her schooling and graduated from the
Clearmont High School, in the spring
of 1916. She then moved to central
South Dakota with friends and
taught country schools for two years.
She attended summer school at the
college in Huron, South Dakota and
here she met and married Paul R.
Bingham in 1918. They resided in
Braddyville, Iowa for several years
before moving to Portland, Oregon in
1938.
She was a sheet metal worker
during WWII in the shipyards, then
was employed by the Oregon News, a
magazine distributor for twelve years
followed by two years with the
Hyster Co. in Portland.
She married Harold Elliott in
January of 1956 and they moved to
Vernonia where he preceded her in
death in 1958. She remained in
Vernonia and worked in a nursing
home in Portland and one in
Hillsboro. She also worked for the
office of the local credit union for
seven and one half years, retiring in
1974. Since then she has helped care
for many local people in their homes
and has worked at the Senior Citizens
Center.
She was a member of the Christian
Church in Braddyville, Iowa and
moved her membership to the
Vernonia Christian Church in 1960.
She was a 29 year member of Beaver
Chapter No. 106 in Beaverton,
Oregon, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are three children; Laura
Mae Robertson, Denver, Colo.; Mavin
W. Bingham, Mancos, Colo, and
Norman E. Binghamxor Portland,
Ore.; six grandchildren and ten great*
gfanchildren. One brother Earl
Snodderley of Clearmont, Mo.
Family requests contributions to
the Vernonia Ambulance Fund or the
charity of your choice.
Hubert George Gamroth
Funeral mass was held for Hubert
George Gamroth, 66, of Vernonia at
11 am on July 13 at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Vernonia. The
Reverend Jerome Schmitz of St.
Mary’s officiated, with interment at
St. Francis Cemetery, Roy following
the ceremony.
Mr. Gamroth died July 8, at St.
Vincent Hospital in Portland. He was
bom November 3, 1914 at Sentinel
Butte, North Dakota, the son of
Andrew and Bridget Gamroth. He
married Loma Lundeen on July 30,
1935 at Rochester, Minnesota, and
lived in Vernonia for 13 years.
He received his education in
Sentinel Butte, North Dakota,
leaving there in 1931 going to
Minnesota and living in the
Rochester area until moving to
Oregon in 1942, settling in Banks and
moved to Vernonia in 1967. He
worked in the lumber, business as a
mill worker, retiring in 1976 due to ill
health. He was a member of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia,
and the Vernonia Grange No. 305.
Surviving are his wife Loma of
Vernonia; sons, James of Taft, Calif.,
Robert of Scappoose, Darrell of
Vernonia and David of Buxton;
daughters, Mrs. Louis (Jean) Forrest
of Buxton and Mrs. Dean (Donna)
Carpenter of Glenwood; brothers,
Leonard of Tigard, Herman of
McMinnville, Tom and Nick of Beach,
North Dakota; sister, Anna Waby of
Chatfield, Minn.; 28 grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
Bernadine “Lucille”Robbins
Bernadine “Lucille Robbins, 58,
wife of Jake Robbins, long time
resident of Vernonia, late of Forest
Grove, died Thursday, July 9 at
Tuality Community Hospital in
Hillsboro, following cm illness over
the past three months.
Services for Mrs. Robbins were held
Saturday, July 11 at 2. pm at the
Vernonia Memorial Cemetery with
Reverend Steve Hopper of Vernonia
Evangelical
Church
officiating.
Arrangements were handled by
Fuiten Mortuary of Vernonia.
Mrs. Robbins was bom January 25,
1923 in Vernonia, daughter of the late
Arnold and Bessie Ziegler Rufli. She
was raised and received her education
in Vernonia.
She was married to Jake Robbins
on September 15,1944 in Vancouver,
Washington. After their marriage
they lived in Vernonia, where she
worked for the Vernonia Eagle
newspaper office and for Kate’s Cafe
before moving to Tillamook in 1962
where she worked for the Big Cheese
Grill. They moved back to Vernonia
in 1969 and in 1979 moved to the
present family home in Forest Grove.
Mrs. Robbins was a former member
of Mt. Hart Rebekah Lodge in
Vernonia.
