'Bye Bye, Birdie
set to go

Tomorrow, May 8 and again May 9,
at 8 pm the curtain will rise on the
VHS production of ‘Bye Bye Birdie’.
Revolving about two stories-the
romance of a composer-publisher-
agent, .Albert Peterson (David
Proehl), and his secretary Rosie
Alverez (Debbie Jackson) and the
drafting into the Army of their great
rock-n-roll star Conrad Birdie (Shawn
Stevens). When everyone, including
Albert’s over-protective mother, Mae
Peterson (Lila Harrison) descend on a
small town in Ohio and create a mass
frenzy
of
complications,
each
hilariously funny as well as tuneful.
For several weeks now the cast and
technical crew have been busy at
work preparing for the production.
Rehearsals were held Mondays
through Thursdays after school and
on some Saturdays for all cast
members.
The lighting crew, under the
direction of Brian Montgomery and
Jeff Smith, advisors, and Shawn
Stevens, student advisor, constructed
two light trees and a dimmer board to
control stage lighting.
Costumes for the entire cast have
been completed thanks to Claurice
Schorzman, advisor, and Kathi
Rinks, student advisor, who spent
several hours searching for relics of
the fifties and sewing costumes.
Many characters have more than two
costume changes, and some have as
many as four.
Make-up and hairstyles for cast
pictures and the productions are the
creation of Sally Harrison, make-up
advisor,
and Guy Richardson,
student advisor.
Terry Nimz and his cabinet making
classes made a thrust which extends
from the stage and they built the
upstairs bedroom for the bi-level set
on the stage.
The publicity crew, under the
direction of Nancy Eckland, advisor,
and Monica Hogan, student advisor,
have completed posters, flyers,
tickets, and programs and they have
also written newspaper articles.
This is the biggest production VHS
has ever put on. A trememdous
number of staff and student hours
and great effort have been put into
the play by all concerned with the
production.

out that the situation may change in
the future and if so a new decision
would be reached then. He also
remarked that to pull out of Central
Dispatch at this point and then to
have to go back to using them when
the 911 emergency telephone system
eventually goes into effect would
mean a drastic increase in the rates
charged to the city by Central.
Mayor Anderegg appointed a new
Cemetary Committee consisting of:
Francis and Deveer Hershey, Tempie
Nance,
Pauline
King,
Ralph
Bergerson, Louise Thomas, Jim
Fuiten and council member Sally
Harrison as chairperson.
A motion calling for the adoption of
a uniform set of operating regulations
for the Vernonia Police Department
was passed. The document sets forth
guidelines for the expression of
grievances, personnel hiring, use of
equipment and a variety of other
situations for which no regulations
currently exist.
