Volunteers lay down first stage of Mist helipad
The highway leading to Mist
rumbled all day last Saturday as
sixty five truck loads of rock were
delivered to the site of the Mist
Helipad by men and equipment
brought in from a one hundred mile
radius. Located next to the Mist
Firehall on Banzer Road the helipad
will be the only full emergency pad of
its kind in the Nehalem Valley when
it is completed next month.
The helipad is located on land
donated by Olympic Forest Products
and the more than 600 cubic yards of
rock necessary for the project were
donated by Longview Fiber Co. In
addition, Karban Rock, of Forest
Grove, provided a driver, Don
Leiman, Sr. and three trucks; Ballad
Towne Communication, of Forest
Grove, donated two drivers, Tom
Rhea and Don Leiman, Jr.; Robles
and Associates of Tigard, provided a
truck driven by a partner in the firm,
Roy Ahearn. Jack Christophersen
Construction of Birkenfeld donated a
truck driven by Dave Olson, a cat
spreader and a loader. Steve Poetter
and Larry Bair of Vernonia each
drove their own trucks while Jack
Christophersen ran the loader at
Archibald Rock pit, off of Apiary
Road, while his son, Dave, ran the
spreader cat at the helipad site. While
numerous area residents dropped by

The truck drivers, each with a full
load of rock, appeared at the helipad
site by 7 am Saturday and didn’t

inspected at the garage under old city
hall.
