GOLFING NEWS
The
Vernonia
Men’s
Golf
Association held their annual Spring
Handicap tournament at the local
Vernonia Golf Course Sunday, April
g2.
Weather conditions were somewhat
less than ideal, to put it mildly,
however 18 enthusiastic golfers were
in attendance showing how dedicated
golfers can be.
Lynn
Michener
won
the
tournament shooting an even par 71
with his handicap. Fred Busch arid
Dan Fletcher came in second with

CHILI FEED SCHEDULED
The Vernonia Country Store would
like to invite everybody to a chili feed
Friday, April 24 from 6-8 pm. Salad,
drink and door prizes are also
included in this event being held at
the Vernonia Senior Center, The cost

The fire hall, the culmination of a
several year-old dream, was erected
on land donated by Olympic Forest
Products and except for $10,000 in
taxpayers money, was built and
financed entirely by volunteers who
raised money for the project by
holding dances, cutting and selling
firewood and holding raffles. Even
the children helped by pulling nail
from old lumber so that it might be
used again. The building has just
been insured for $80,000, according to
Laubach.
A potluck buffet lunch, prepared by
the volunteer’s wives and quickly
consumed by the nearly 125 people
present, completed the afternoon's
program.

out again to play a game of scramble.
A good time was had by all despite
the weather.
LADIES GOLF
Monday, April 13, the Vernonia
Ladies Golf Association elected
officers for 1981. Elected were: Ruth
Nogle, President; Fran Fletcher, Vice-
President; Edna Hailey, Secretary;
and Ilene Grady, Treasurer.
First play of the season is
scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 at 5
pm. A golf clinic and Friday night
Scotch Foursomes are planned for
May.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
Applications for the low income
energy assistance program will be
taken on Fridays from 10 am-2 pm at
the Vernonia Senior Center. Call 429-

IWLA school program

show pointed out the practices,
including certain types of farming,
irrigation and forestry präctices, that
, tend to degradate stream and small
river environments. Soil erosion, loss
of wildlife habitat and the effects of
damming were also discussed.
Rawlings, past president of the
Oregon chapter of the IWLA, has
made this same presentation to over
80,000 school children all over the
Northwest in the last three years. “I
love it,” he says. ‘‘The questions they
ask never cease to amaze me,” he
added. Tuesday’s presentation was
_ organized by the Vernonia Chapter of
the IWLA.
The presentation, a part of the
‘Save Our Streams’ program entitled
Oregon Streams: At the Crossroads,
pointed out Oregon’s leadership in
establishing conservation legislation
but also made the point to the
children that maintaining our water
resources depends on each of us and
that it is never too early to begin
taking an interest in protecting those
resources.

AEROBIC DANCING

BROWNIES GO TO SHRINERS
CIRCUS
A class for beginners wanting to
learn the steps for Aerobic Dance
exercising will begin on Thursday
April 16 at the Vernonia High School
Gym. Class time is 6:30-7:15 pm. It
will continue until all steps are
learned on a three record set now
being done on Monday and
Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30
pm. There is no charge for this class.

Sunday, March 29, twenty-six
Brownies and their leaders, Carol
Barker and Celeste Pilgrim, went to
Portland to see the Shriners Circus.
The tickets were donaed by the
Shriners and the girls had a great
time after which they all went to the
Arctic Circle for something to eat.
The girl’s meals were paid by the
money they had earned selling Girl
Scout calendars, Girl Scout cookies
and items made for sale for the Girl
Scout Bazaar, held earlier in the year.
Gym school sponsors salmon feed
Hungry for a good salmon dinner?
At a reasonable cost? Columbia River
Gymnastics Academy in St. Helens is
having a Salmon Bake on Tuesday,
April 21, 1981 at a price you can’t
pass up, adult $5, students $2.50 and
pre-schoolers free. Dinner will be

Jenelle Wiggins-Wysong of Keasey
will be guest of honor at a baby
shower and potluck dinner, to be held
by the Columbia County Historical
Society, in appreciation for her help
on the soon to be published book, “A
History of the Upper Nehalem
Valley” by Lesta Garner.
The meeting will be hosted by
Shirley Colvin Nusom in her home at
Marshland - four miles west of
Clatskanie, Wednesday, April 22. The
van will leave the Vernonia museum
at 11 am sharp. All are welcome.
