Richard Pau! fatally injured as tractar overturns
Richard Paul, 70, was fatally
injured last Saturday night at his
home of 35 years when his tractor
over-turned on him while he was
trying to pull a pick-up truck out of
the mud.
According to firefighters, first on
the scene, Paul was trying to free a
pick-up that had become stuck in the
mud near a creek on his property near
Fishhawk Lake. Although others at
the scene told him it would be
unnecessary, he apparently didn’t
hear them telling him to stop when he
backed the tractor onto a knoll near
the stranded vehicle. As he backed
the tractor onto the knoll, witnesses
say, the tractor’s center of gravity
shifted and started to flip the vehicle.

ORGANIZATIONS NEED HELP
FOR STREET ADDRESSESS!!
Representatives of the Columbia
County Fire Chiefs, along with local
law enforcement agencies and the
Department of Emergency Services,
have
asked
the
County
Commissioners to adopt a grid-street
numbering system. This system,
similar to those already in use in
other areas, will provide numerical
addressing
throughout
the
unincorporated areas of Columbia
County. It is planned to replace the
existing old rural route system, and
would put an end to changes that are
made when a postal route is revised
and changed.
The organizations are sponsoring
the change because it proposes an end
to the sometimes confusion of the old
route system, and replaces it with one/
which is in order and has continuity.
Incorporating a system such as the
new one would enable responding
emergency units to locate an area and
pin-point a residence immediately.
This will enable ambulances, fire
apparatus, and police vehicles to
eliminate a great deal of time in their
response, providing faster emergency
services to the tax-payer.

An Emergency Medical Technician
I Class will be held in Hillsboro
beginning April 27,1981. Class times
will be from 7 pm to 10 pm Monday
and Wednesday evenings. The class is
Washington County EMS and
Oregon State EMS approved and will
be coordinated by Jimmie L. Floyd,
EMT IV-Paramedic with Metro West
Ambulance. The class will meet
Department
of
Transportation
standards and provide inservice both
on a paramedic ambulance and in the
emergency department of Tuality
Community Hospital. The class will
also prepare those interested in being
able to take the State and/or National
Certification Examinations.

area who are using city water that the
water charge will increase by $1.00 on
April 1st, and again by $1.00 on July
1,1981.

Finding it impossible to remove the
van from its position on the sundial
the thieves just left it there, its rear
axle centered on the sundial, and
hanging two feet off the ground.
The Vernonia Police Department
has no firm suspects as yet, but the
matter is under investigation.

MEASURES
Due to numerous complaints from
local residents, Columbia County Dog
Control officers will be working in
Vernonia throughout all of next week.
Citations will be issued to those
whose dogs do not meet county
ordinances. According to County
Commissioner Marion Sahagian,
“Their instructions are to be tought.’’
Sahagian also reminds dog owners
that the license deadline was March 1,
1981 and that licenses purchased late
will now cost twice the standard $10
fee. Owners are also reminded that
they must bring a current rabies
vaccination certificate with them
when they register their dogs.

after the accident by Mist-Birkenfeld
Ambulance. The funeral, held March
17 at the Little Mist Church, gave
over 80 mourners a chance for a final
farewell. Internment followed at
Fishhawk Cemetary.
Paul was described by many who
knew him as a “Good friend and '
neighbor,’’ one witness said. “We’ll
all miss him,’’ he added.
