Senior Citizens report
As of March 3, 1980, Meals-On-Wheels
(M.O.W.) will go to five* days a week.
Please call in or let the driver know if you
would like meals five-days a week.
Be encouraged to call in and volunteer!
It will only take about Va hour to 45
minutes of your time and it is a service we
really need and we appreciate any time
you can volunteer.
From Oct, 1979 to Jan. 1980 we have
seved a total of: 1759 Meals in the dining
hall, 573 M.O.W.’s, 265 volunteers.
We would like to th an k all the

organizations for all their time and
efforts: The Catholic Church, Vernonia
Bible
Church,’ B ap tist
Church,
Evangelical Church, Christian Church,
Americal Legion Auxilary, Rebekal
Lodge, P.E.O., Natal Grange, Vernonia
Grange, Study Club, and Extension Club.
Also a special th an k s to Sandy
Christopherson, Hazel Shipman, Celeste
Poetter, Dick Gonzales, Robert Wiley,
Tom Hall, and all the other people who
have delivered M.O.W.’s for us and
helped up to keep this most important
service going. Last, but not least we
would like to especially thank Vem, the
butcher at Vernonia Market Place, for
cutting and wrapping the deer we had
donated to the SNAPP program.
’ Without all of these peoples support
and help this program would have folded
up before if had a chance.

to Minnie Meier who donated the
materials for the sign hanging over the
Center entrance.

person!
Attention: Any senior who feels, the
pressure of raising winter fuel costs
because their income remains the same, a
possible solution exists in the energy
assistance program. This assistance is
provided by our Congress and our
President. It is not welfare (as most
people veiw Tyelfare). I t ’s handled through
the “HELP” offices. An example of the
guidelines is: for a family of one, gross
monthly income can be $352.60; family of
2, $468.75 per month; etc. This is monthly
cash flow independant of food stamps,
sayings, property holdings unless
receiving interest on a monthly cash
basis. Do contact the Senior Advocate
who is this areas administrator of the
energy assistance program. The telephone
number is 429-3912. Many wise folk have
already received up to $300 in help for one
of either oil, wood, or electric.
Returning to the subject of “welfare,
take note that welfare merely means “the
well-being of people” .' Orginally an
expression of society’s compassion for its
own. Sadly and somewhat typically of
human nature the term “Welfare” now
carries negative overtones caused by the
individual rather than a compassionate
society.
Girl Scouts to have Thinking day
The Girl Scouts from the Vernonia area
will participate in Girl Scout’s Annual
Thinking Day event on Saturday, Feb. 23,
at Portland Community College’s Sylvania
Campus in Portland.
Thinking Day is an event recognized by
Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the
world in celebration of Lord and Lady
Baden-Pdwell’s birthdays. Lord Baden-
Powell founded the Boy Scout movement
and subsequent Girl Scout movement in
London, England in 1908.
“As a world-wide organization, Thinking
Day gives girls opportunity to ‘think’ of
their sister scouts in different countries,
and leam about some of their crafts, foods
and customs,” explained Non Skinner and
Celest Pilgrim, local leaders.
The Girl Scouts will, be attending
sessions throughout the (fay Where they
will learn about and participate in
activities orginating from other countries.
Over 2300 Girl Scouts and their leaders
from the Columbia River Girl Scout
Council will attend the event. The Council
spans 13 counties in Oregon and
Washington. .

Those participating in the program,
designed especially for the elderly, with
chronic health problems and persons
living alone, will be given an information
sheet on which they will list all health
problems, allergies, their doctor’s name,
the hospital they prefer, and whom to
notify in case of an emergency, and a vial
in which to place the information.
The vial is then to be placed in a
specified position in their regrigerator
where it can be easily located in an
emergency, and a florescent sticker will be
placed on the, front door of the home, so
those responding to the emergency will be
aware that the information is available.
Also remember to update the form when
any-of the information should change.
(Such as medicine, doctor, etc.).

Melodrama cast to meet tonight
Vernonia Jaycees Melodrama meeting
went over very well with lots of old
familiar faces and some new ones. For
anyone interested in auditions or casting
for the Melodrama play, there will be a
m eeting a t Carolyn K easeys’ a t 8
Thursday evening.
A follow-up meeting will be at the
I.O.O.F. Hall Monday, Feb. 25 at 8 pm
concerning the Melodrama. All interested
persons feel welcome to come in and help.
This is fast becoming the fun project we
all remember. We have a few surprises up
our sleeves for you “weary” audiences.
We hope to have one of the best
productions ever.
