summer will yield next summer’s berries.
Although pruning the new canes will
remove some flower buds that would form
fruit, the remaining buds will make larger
and better fruit, says Bubl.
, The canes that bore fruit last summer
should have been removed by now. If not,
remove them first. Then cut out all but 10
or 12 healthy, new canes for each plant.
The weak and spindly canes should be
taken first. Then select the healthiest
canes grown last summer to leave for
fruiting this year.
There aré several methods to trellising
or holding the canes erect. The simplist is
a strong wire attached to posts and about
five feet high. The canes are tied to the
wire.
Some gardeners use a three—wire
support where two parallel wires are
placed a couple feet off the ground. The
canes are trained between the two wires
and the tops are tied to a third wire five
feet off the ground.
Once the pruning is finished, the
remaining canes should be tied to the top
wire of the trellis system with a strong
twine. Then prune off the cane ends six
inches to a foot above the wire.
Lichen and moss
The presence of lichen and moss on
landscape plants has been the object of
concern for many people latély.
“Mosses, and lichens? don’t pose a
serious problem. Except under certain
specific conditions, they don’t do any
harm,’’ says Chip Bubl, Columbia
County Agricultural agent.
Mosses can harbor insects. And they
do hold extra water on the plant. During a
freeze, the water turns to ice and adds
weight to thé plant, making it more
susceptible to wind damage.
Lichen and moss tend to be more
prevalent in the Willamette Valley
because of the wet winters. They are often
found where landscape plantings are
crowded and in trees that have been
pruned poorly or not at all:
A number of spray materials will
eliminate them, including lime sulfur,
fixed copper and Bordeaux mixture.
Generally, lime sulfur is muxed at a rate
of one part lime sulfur to nine parts
nwater, fixed copper at one part fixed
copper to 25 parts water, and Bordeaux
mixture at 12-12-100.

All these sprays can cause house paint
to discolor, so use caution when spraying
near buildings.
The dormant season from late
November through early March is the
best time to spray. The chemical must
contact the lichens and mosses to be
effective. Areas not covered will not be
controlled.
Filbert trees are the only exception to
spraying during the winter. They should
not be sprayed during the pollination
process, which could be anytime from late
December through February.
“The dead mosses and lichens will
remain on the tree for a time after they are
killed, but will eventually weather away,’’
says Bubl.

Government? The less-developed nation
that is to receive the technological
information? The United Nations maybe?
It is hard to imagine any of the above
choices. Some smaller nations want all of
the technology that is available even if
the introduction of that science means
starvation for the locals. Money and
influence buying play a large role in the
current spread of technology. These
certainly are not the motives that should
be building the world’s future.
President Carter put forth an idea in a
speech in Caracas, Venezuela last spring
that is one of the best options for
developing nations. Carter proposed the
creation of a Foundation for International
Technological cooperation as a part of the
U.S. government.
The main problems with this plan:
taxpayers would be footing the bill, and
the U.S. governmental bias might
interfere.
A better plan may be to develop a
foundation like the one in Carter’s idea,
but divorce it from any government. The
logical move would be to run such a
foundation through the United Nations.

technology, however, affects less-
developing countries in the world much
more harshly. Smaller countries that are
beginning to industrialize face a shock
when technology from developed
countries floods over the underdeveloped
society and governmental structures.
A major decision and policy making
conference is scheduled this summer. The
United Nations Conference on Science
and Technology for Development set for
this August will bring together
governmental delegations and scientists
to kick around technological priorities.
The outcome of this meeting will be far-
reaching. Decisions made here will affect
the future of every nation in the world.
How should the U.S. handle its spread
of technology? Should scientific and
technological secrets be sold to the higest
bidder? Or perhaps traded for resources?
Another consideration: Should the U.S.
government give nuclear technology to
nations composed of hunters and
gatherers? And who is to judge what sort
of technology is good for a specific
