The other night I had my first opportunity to attend a planning commission
meeting. Since the initiation of the LCDC there has been a lot of controversy
over the issue but one thing is for certain, it’s here and we had better deal with
it.
The only way we can retain local control over our situation is to participate.
To this end I am going to publish the whole of the Vernonia Comprehensive
plan in four parts between now and the Jan. 3rd issue.
It may well be very redundent and say little new but I found it enlightening
to read through the whole thing so that everything could sink in completely.
Broken into four parts it doesn’t take that much time to read. It is better to
read now and know what we’re getting into than to read and weep in the
future when the plans have already been made.
I suggest you read it over and if you have a great deal of support or
dissatisfaction with any aspect of the plan you should attend the meetings and
let it be known.

CPA C continued from front
Robert Bates who had made
application for a Variance to replace a
mobile home on their property with a
new mobile home. Their request was
rejected on the grounds that it was
not an authorized varience in a
residential zone. The Bates contended
that a hardship was involved but
were told that their situation was a
misuse of the definition of hardship.
Argument ensued and the Bates left
dissatisfied.
A letter requesting action upon a
City Bicycle Path Plan was received
from Charles T. Ramsdale county
planner responsible for same.
A few minor additions or changes
were submitted to the Vernonia
Comprehensive Plan by planner
Clyde Strictland and then a request
that a public hearing be held as soon
as possible on the plan. The
Committee decided to have their next
regular meeting tonight Dec. 13
instead of next week and to shoot for
a Public Hearing on Jan. 3.
Begining on Page 3 you will find the
first part of a four part printing of the
tentative Vernonia Comprehensive
’ Plan.

The' Columbia County Unit of the
American Cancer Society is initiating
a program which has proven most
worthwhile in other areas.
This year in lieu of sending
Christmas cards, you are urged to
contribute a minimum of $10 to the
American Cancer Society. The names
only (not the amount) of those who
contribute will be listed in a
Christmas New Year’s Greeting to be
published in the Vernonia Freedom
The published greeting will appear
similar to that of a Christmas card
with a notation below, “In lieu of
mailing Christmas Greetings to their
local friends, the following have
contributed to the American Cancer
Society.” The names of all
contributions would follow.
All contributions which are tax
deductible, must be received by
December 15, to be included in the
listing. Make your Christmas
Greeting have real meaning by
clipping the portion below and
sending it and your check today.

What a welcome to Vernonia! I came
here to this town from a big city, looking
for warmth and trust. For the most part I
have found that small town feeling. But I
can’t understand why someone in this
town would want to steal my clothes from
the laundromat in town. I am a hard
working person, I teach at the school and
volunteer my time to work with children
and people in the Community. However I
find that taking my clothes is hardly a
show of appreciation for my services.
I am hot in a position right now to be
able to replace these clothes, as it is
Christmas time, and I am spending for
others rather than myself. You who took
my clothes left me without socks,
underwear, jeans, sweatshirts and sheets
for my bed!
I would appreciate their return. You can
call me at 429-7941 (school) or 429-9671
(home) and I will not ask any questions. Or
you can drop them off in a bag at the grade
school or back in the laundromat where
you took them from. If you are that needy
that you need to steal someone else’s
clothes, I would be willing to help in other
ways. But please return my clothes!
