M rs. Bob Colton was very pleased when

City Hall. We hope to have a dedication
service in his honor when completed.
I’m very happy that so many of our
citizens are enthusiastic about a memorial
for Mr. Colton and all think this to be
a very fitting one. The pole has been
ordered by the city.

Army Reserve Major Alan R. Thompson,
son of Mr. and M rs. Orval Thompson,
251 Jam es Street, Willamina, Oregon,
completed the final phase of the command
and general staff officer course at the
U.S. Army Command and General Staff
College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
The course is organized into nine phases
and givenover a five-year period either
by correspondence o r through the U.S.
Army Reserve School System. The final
two week phase is conducted at Ft. Lea
venworth.
The training is designed to prepare se
lected officers for responsible positions
at division and support command levels.
It also provides them with an understand
ing of the duties of corps and field
army general staff uh.-cers, and of army
participation in joint and combined oper-

Darvin L ester Klingler, son of Mr. and
M rs. William L. Klingler of 1393 W.
Main Street, Sheridan, Oregon was sworn
into the Navy's Cache program on Oct. 10
in the rating of Seaman Recruit.
Young Klingler qualified for and is guar
anteed training in the Navy's Aviation
section as an Aviation Structural Mech
anic. He had a long row ahead as he
started his processing because he was
a high school drop out but through hard
work and a never-quit will he attained
his GED for the Navy and consequently
was guaranteed his Mechanic specialty.
Klingler made application at the Navy
Recruiting Station, McMinpville, and was
processed for enlistment by Dalles
Bartell, Yamhill County's Navy Recruiter.
Bartell went on to report that the Navy
encourages all men and women to stay
in school and graduate and invites those
in their senior year to stop by and see
if they are qualified for the program that
they are interested in, especially now
with the delay allowed for applicants of
one year in reporting for active duty.
Many of these sim ilar types of jobs are
now open aiid at the Navy’s new sta rt
ing salary they are really attractive.
Klingler has chosen October 19 as his
date to report for active duty and will
at that time attend nine weeks of recruit
training in San Diego, California.

Mr. Rudy Burkhalter of Berne, Switer-
land is an author, composer and author
ity on Swiss and alpine folklore. He is
also an RCA recording artist and has
performed in Town Hall ( New York),
the Hollywood Bowl, the Berlin Winter-
garten, the Prince of Wales Theatre
(London), and has composed music for
Walt Disney Productions. He is recom
mended by the Swiss Consulate General,
the United States Swiss societies of Amer
ica and the Swiss National Tour Office.
Mr. Burkhalter will present a program
that is unique for school assem blies.
It includes instrumental music, yodeling
flag throwing, alpine horn demonstration
coin spinning and a scene from "Will
