I T H IN K we can divid e women * into two groups when they look into th e ir old clothes closets. T he re ’s the firs t group who m ake a w ry face and who try to get rid of these garm ents as q u ic k ly as pos sible. Then there's the second group. These women th o u g h tfu lly p ick up each garm ent, consult th e ir fashion notes and convert the dresses into something th a t could have come fro m a s m a rt depart- , m ent store. To the s m a rt woman, th e re ’ s not a dress no m a tte r how old. that cannot prove useful if she is cleve r w ith the needle. Some garm ents n a tu ra lly w ill require a good deal of re s ty lin g or even com plete a lte r ation. O thers w ill need ju s t a sligh t change in neckline or s k irt to m ake them co m p le te ly new and re- freshed. Dresses freq ue n tly discarded are j old fo rm a ts w hich look so woe begone when they come out of clos- , ets. Yet look a t the beautiful m ate- . ria ls in th em , and th in k fo r a 1 m om ent how nicely they could be made into p e rfe c tly b ea utifu l house- i coats, new form ats or fresh-look ing suits. I f the neckline on an old fo rm a l I is hopeless, i t ’s an easy m a tte r to a lte r this. Perhaps you w ill buy a b it of net and w ork this into a new type o f yoke and sleeves. Sequinned straps m ay be taken a pa rt and used at the w ris ts as seen in so m any of the gowns showing G recian in fluence. O r, take the sequins a p a rt and use them as a decoration around the neckline, or clustered together in a design or flower. I f you have an old ve lve t fo rm a l or dinner dress of prew ar vintage, you m ay be delighted to discover th a t the ve lve t is of an exquisite If you have an old form al . . . q ua lity. Restore it to life by steam ing, or have it cleaned profession a lly. Y our daughter m ay be looking fo r one of the new bare shoulder for- m als to wear at her high school dance, and this m ig h t be ju s t the m a te ria l fo r her. There w ill prob ably be enough fo r ju s t such a dress. I f not, select a s m a ll quan I tity o f wide grosgrain in m atch ing color and use it at the s k irt or around the bodice fo r trim m in g . Another good idea fo r the ve lve t 1 g arm ent is a housecoat. I f there is not quite enough m a te ria l to make a com fortable coat of th is type, plan to use coral and lim e draping at the fro n t, as this is a v e ry effec tiv e com bination w ith b la ck velvet. Am ong the inn u m e ia b le uses fo r th is velvet, you m ig h t discover th a t the dress could be rem odeled into a V icto ria n or Renaissance style fo rm a l fo r c u rre n t w ear. R ecut the neckline, m aking it a square or sweetheart type, and add a b it of lace ru fflin g to give ch arm . This lace m ig h t also be used as an insert in the s k irt or as a decoration around the w rists. \ Consider the M a te ria l I When Doing Restyling Just as you select a new dress •Sour Cream Cabbage. Pay p a rtic u la r attention to such d e ta il as the sleeves and the bustle and follow the pattern care fu lly . I f there is not quite enough m a te ria l, use co ntrastin g ribbon, or | m odify the style ju s t a little to suit the in d iv id u a l w earer. Bustles are a ttra c tiv e only i f they are styled c o rre c tly . A dress fo rm is handy to have fo r m oulding the lines c a re fu lly , as they m ay re q uire sligh t adaptation fro m the o rig inal style. Pin and baste c a re fu lly and then tr y the effect on the actual person and m ake any other nec essary adjustm ents before p uttin g in the final stitches. You m ay also use tissue paper under neath the m a te ria l when sewing, as this gives the m a te ria l m ore body w hile you stitch . T his is eas ily ripped off when you finish the sewing. Planning Wardrobes There are m any interestin g ways of choosing clothing for yourself. One o f the best ways o f appearing yo u r m ost a t tra c tiv e is alw ays to choose col ors th a t blend w ell or contrast w ith yo ur own personal type of beauty. I f you have a love ly home, look to the colors you use in yo ur room s and “ b o rro w ” them fo r yo u r w ardrobe. O r, if you have a lovely p ic tu re p rin t in color, test the colors against yo ur own com plexion and see if they c a n 't fu rn ish in s p ira tio n fo r your clothing. Check a ll colors you would use on y o u rs e lf fro m a ll angles. See w ha t they do fo r you under d if fe re nt lig h tin g , and when you are c e rta in they fla tte r you a l ways, use them as a basis for y o u r w ardrobe. I t ’s alw ays a good idea to have one or two good basic dresses in the w ardrobe, and several sets o f accessories to go w ith them . I f you have a suit, m ake sure i t fits p e rfe c tly , and then build a w ardrobe around it w ith d iffe r ent blouses and dickies, hats, shoes and other accessories.
