Ed Laux Will Attend National
CIO Convention
J. Ed. Laux will leave Tuesday
for Philadelphia, where he is a
delegate to the national CIO con-
venton whch meets there from
November 1, to 6. Mr. Laux is
one of six delegates from over
the nation, representing the tim
ber workers.
New officers for the national
organization, Mr. Laux states,
will be one of the major matters
of the convention. Discussion of
a number of national issues, the
tax bill and other national issues
will probably get some discus
sion and probable action.
Employers Urged To Pay
Wit holding Tax Before Oct. 31
J. W. Maloney, Collector of In
ternal Revenue, today called the
attention of all employers who
are required to withhold Income
Tax from the wages of their em
ployees that the returns of this
tax are now’ due and must be
filed with the Collector of Inter
na! Revenue, Portland. Oregon,
not later than October 31, 1943.
Mr. Maloney said that unus
ually severe penalties are im
posed under this new act for
any failure to file the return in
time to reach the Collector’s of
fice within the time specified
above. There is a minimum ad
dition to the tax of $20.00 for
failure to file return and pay the
tax when due. Collector Maloney
urges employers to avoid this
penalty by mailing their returns
in time to reach his office not
later than October 31, 1943.

WILLAMINA, YAMHILL COUNTY, OREGON Thursday, October 21, 1043
$2550 WILLAMINA COMMUNITY’S
QUOTA FOR WAR CHEST FUND
T h e Willamina community
will start nvxi Monday on its
drive to raise $2550 for the Na
tional War Chest Fund; that
amount being the quota assign
ed to this section for all the war
relief ugencies excluding the Red
Cross. The total national goal is
$125,000,000 and goes to sup
port 17 different agencies for
war relief work including our
own USO. In fact, the USO gets
almost one half of the entire
amount that is to be raised and
goes directly for the help and
welfare of American soldiers in
service.
Yamhill county’s quota of the
national fund is $19,142.00 and
to that has been added the wel
fare agencies of Oregon, work
ing especially for children, the
amount of $2.721.00 and $3600
for Boy Scout work making a
grand total of slightly less than
21.900,00 for the county.
The mayors of the various
towns constitute a committee for
the raising of these funds and
they have allocated the amounts
out to various towns as they l>e-
lieve is equitable.
While the campaign runs from
October 18th to November 18th.,
the campaign will not officially
start in the Willamina commun
ity until Monday, October 25th.
Chairman A. L. Newby has ap-
],ointed a large committee which
will endeavor to make the cam
paign successful but the mayor
calls attention to the fact that
this campaign is one that the
people themselves must largely
carry out without dependence on
others to help them.
Posters and folders are being
prepared and will be circulated
in and around the city and do
nors are asked to make contri
butions early and thus facilitate
the whole effort.
