THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1942 >1.60 A YEAR JOIN THE VICTORY CENTER OPENING FRI. 7:30 NATIONALLY FAMOUS BOND SALE GIRLS GUESTS AT VICTORY CENTER OPENING TWO LOCAL LADS NOW NAVAL AVIATION CADETS Willamina’s first contribution to the air arm of the United States Navy came recently with the enlistment of Glenn Larkins, 18, and Darrel Sims, 19, as United States naval aviation cadets, word received today from the office of Commander Bert H. Creighton, Senior Member of the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board for the TTiirteenth Naval District, disclosed. The two young men who were school mates in high school and are friends of long standing, will start in the near future on an intensive train ing program that will fit them to take to the air as aviators in the fight against those powers which would like to destroy American freedom. This training will include the study of subjects vital to aviation and participation in the physical develop ment program, designed to toughen menl American aviators for the long and _a_____ . . . strenous work in fighting the axis powers. From the college they will go to naval aviation bases in the west where they will be thoroughly trained in many phases of aviation. This will include piloting a ahip, formation flying, navigational flying, gunnery, catapult work, and many other phases of flying. Upon completion of the course they will receive the Golden W ings of the naval flyer and com mission as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marins Corps. This program is open to all qualified high school graduates bet ween the ages of eighteen and twen ty-six years. DEFENSE ORGANIZATION WILL HOLD A CASUALTY PRACTICE The Civilian Defense Organization will put on a casualty accident prac tice Tuesday night, September 15th. Improvised ambulances have been arranged for and each district war den will be assigned two messenger boys in lieu of telephones to carry messages to the casualty station, which will be the high school., and an ambulance will be dispatched with first aid crews to where the “victim" lies injured. Mr. Bill Stewart and Mr. Luther Hyder have donated the use of their trucks which will be used as ambu lances. Boy scouts will be used as messen gers, but more boys with bicycles are needed. There will be a meeting of messengers in the scout room in the rear of the Methodist church basement Monday night. September 14h, and all boys 10 to 16 that have bicycles are asked to attend this meeting. It is not necessary to be a member of the scouts to attend this meeting. This is an opportunity for any boy to take part in civilian de fense. A test drill for the state inspectors will have to be given soon and some practice must be had. The public is asked not to get alarmed if they see strechers bearers carrying their neighbors out of the house. B. FRANKLIN LAID TO REST TUESDAY Friends and neighbors of the K. T. Franklin family were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Bernhard Floyd Franklin, who passed away at the McMinnville hospital Saturday, September 5th, 1942 after a short illness. The funeral was held at the Sheri dan Chapel Tuesday, September 8th, with Reverend H. H. Miles officia ting. Mortuary burial was held at Dallas. Bernhard Franklin was an active member of the Boy Scout Troop 254, and members of the troo^ acted as pallbearers. They were Manford Han sen, Arthur Hulsey, Darland Ray.
