BETTER COMPLEXION
SEEN IN INDUSTRY
The West's lumber Industry

price-w ise, last week. But It
was an appear anee which result
ed from a continuing cut In
production rather than any In
crease in demand from the con
suming a r e a s , according to
Random Lengths, weekly lumbe
market newsletter.
Reduced work weeks--with
some m ills down to three days
of operation — shutdowns for
deer hunting and for economic
reasons, and rain after almosi
50 days of dry weather all con
tributed their bit towards bring
ing production Into line with
demand. As a result, most
lum berprices took on firmness
and t h e r e were some which
s h o w e d a tendency to climb
slightly.
However, there were no In
dications of a big surge inpricet
because of the continued lack
of consistent demand from the
consumers. Potential increases
market observers feel, a r e
limited to $1 or $2.
While the Green Fir Mills last
week began to hold firmly to
their asking p rices, big buyers
were not hesitating to make
volume purchases in the belief
that prices are at their lowest.
Mills shipping mixed green
and dry lumber continued to get
firm prices for their products
with Green Utility Grade Dimen
sion continuing to be the market
leader.
Plywood producers, a f t e r
moving their list prices up $4
to $72 for the 1/4-inch sanded
stock, were optimistic that the
new level would hold. The in
crease in sanded Plywood prices
strengthened the position of th.
Sheathing producers. Some of
them were considering an i n
crease in prices for their pro
duct.
